SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team picked up its first series victory of the year as the Huskies won their second straight one-run game, beating Nevada 5-4 Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (6-15) won 4-3 Saturday after Nevada (5-15) won the series opener, 2-1, on Friday. Washington has now won three out of its last five games.
Husky second baseman Jacob Clem went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple and two RBI to lead the UW attack. Brian Wolfe drove in two runs as well.
UW senior starter Jacob Clem (2-4) earned the win, allowing three runs over five innings. Adam Cimber pitched the final inning and two-thirds, striking out two, for the save, his first of the year.
Nevada starter Mark Joukoff (1-5) was charged with the loss. In his three and two-thirds innings, he gave up four runs (three earned) on just three hits.
After two quick outs in the top of the first, Nevada broke through for a run. Nick Melino singled and then scored from first, just beating a throw to the plate, on a double from Brock Stassi. After a walk, Garrett Yrigoyen singled to center, scoring Stassi to give the Wolf Pack a 2-0 lead.
Washington tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Dawgs loaded the bases on a hit batter, a double from Lamb and a walk. Eric Peterson then drew a walk on a full-count pitch to force in one and Wolfe was hit in the leg by the first pitch he saw, forcing home another.
Nevada catcher Carlos Escobar, Jr. opened the second inning with a towering home run just inside the left-field foul pole, his first of the year, to give the lead back to the Wolf Pack at 3-2.
In the third, Husky third baseman Troy Scott reached on an error. After stealing second and moving to third on a ground out, he scored on a two-out single from DH Brian Wolfe, knotting the score at 3-3. In the fourth, Lamb's two-out single scored Spencer Rogers from second base to put the UW in front, 4-3.
Lamb added his third hit and second RBI in the sixth inning as he tripled to score Rogers, who led off the inning with a single.
Nevada threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with a single and two walks. With one out, reliever Adam Cimber came on and struck out the two batters he faced to preserve the 5-3 lead.
In the ninth, a three-base error opened the inning and a sacrifice fly from Tommy Niebergall cut the lead to 5-4, but Cimber got two more fly balls to end the game.
Washington wraps up this four-game home stand when Portland visits Tuesday night for a 5:00 p.m. game. Fans can watch live video, for free, at gohuskies.com. The game will also air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
