SEATTLE - Freshman Austin Voth struck out eight over six innings in his first college start and Chase Anselment belted a two-run homer to lead the Washington baseball team to a 6-1 win over Brigham Young Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
Washington (2-7) snapped a seven-game losing streak with the victory. BYU (6-4) had won the previous two games of the series. In both cases, the Cougars scored in the ninth to break a tie.
Voth (1-0), who had appeared in one prior game as a reliever, struck out the side in both the first and fifth innings. The Kentwood High grad ended up allowing one run on three hits in his six innings. Fellow freshman Jeff Brigham worked the final three innings, allowing one run, for his first save.
BYU starter Mark Anderson (1-1) took the loss. He surrendered four runs on six hits in his four and two-thirds innings of work.
Washington scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second. With runners at first and second with two outs, left fielder Joe Meggs lined a single to left, scoring Cody Stephens from second. Meggs, son of UW head coach Lindsay Meggs, was making his Husky debut. He redshirted last season due to transfer rules and then missed the first eight games of this year due to a hand injury.
BYU answered in the third. With runners at first and second and two outs, Cougar DH Ryan Bernal singled through the left side, sending home Stephen Wells to make it 1-1.
Washington went back on top in the fourth. After a single from B.K. Santy, a walk to Cody Stephens and a balk put runners at second and third, Ty Afenir reached on an infield single to score one. A groundball from Spencer Rogers plated Stephens, giving the UW a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, Anselment singled and eventually scored on a two-out single from Jacob Lamb, stretching the lead to 4-1.
In the seventh, Anselment belted a long, two-run homer to right-center field, increasing the UW lead to 6-1. It was the first home run of the season for the UW sophomore.
BYU scored a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Wells.
The Huskies continue their current seven-game home stand this week, squaring off with Seattle U. Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. before playing host to Dallas Baptist next Thursday through Saturday.
