Dawgs Rally In 8th And 9th, But Cal Holds On, 4-3

SEATTLE - After being held to one hit over the first seven innings, the Washington baseball team mounted a rally in the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to complete the comeback as 16th-ranked California held on for a 4-3 win Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Trailing 3-0 entering the eighth, the Huskies scored a pair and, after giving up a run in the top of the ninth, the Huskies scored one in the ninth and left the tying and winning runs on base.
Cal starter Dixon Anderson (4-1) allowed only one hit through the first seven innings before tiring in the eighth. He got the win, allowing two runs on three hits over seven-plus innings.
UW freshman starter Austin Voth (1-4) took the loss. In his four innings, he allowed three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out four. Adam Cimber threw three scoreless innings in relief.
Cal (23-9 overall, 9-3 Pac-10) scored a run in the first. Vince Bruno singled to lead off and stole both second and third base on strikeout pitches to the plate. With two outs, catcher Chadd Krist singled to left to score him, staking the Bears with the early lead.
In the fourth, Krist led off the inning by doubling off the left-field fence. After moving to third on a groundout, he scored when Mitch Delfino doubled, just fair down the right-field line. Another grounder moved Delfino to third and he scored on a two-out, infield single from Andrew Knapp, increasing the Bears' lead to 3-0.
Anderson had retired 14 in a row going into the eighth. However, Huskies Eric Peterson and B.K. Santy opened the inning with singles and Chase Anselment drew a walk to load the bases. After Kevin Miller came on in relief, Brendan Gardner-Young reached on an infield single to plate Peterson. Pinch hitter Brian Wolfe then grounded into a double play to score another, but Miller got a grounder to second base to end the inning with the Bears' lead still in tact at 3-2.
Cal shortstop Marcus Semien added a fourth run in the ninth with a one-out solo homer to left, his fourth of the year.
In the ninth, with one out, Jacob Lamb singled and Troy Scott ripped a double to left-center to put the tying runs on base. Cal closer Matt Flemer came on and got a run-scoring groundout from pinch hitter Ryan Wiggins, moving Scott to third with the potential tying run.
Santy was then hit by a pitch and stole second to place the potential winning run in scoring position, but Flemer got a strikeout to end the game and earn his fourth save.
Krist finished 3-for-4 with two doubles for Cal while the Huskies (10-23, 2-7) got two hits from Gardner-Young.
The Huskies remain at home for the coming week. SeattleU visits for the fourth of four meetings this year, Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Then, Thursday through Saturday, USC comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game series.
