Dawgs Lead Early, But Fall To Bruins, 5-3

LOS ANGELES - After trailing or playing even through the first five innings, 24th-ranked UCLA scored two in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and then hung on to beat the Washington baseball team, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins, who edged the Huskies 2-1 on Friday, improved to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-10, while Washington fell to 7-17 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
UCLA starter Trevor Bauer, who earned All-America honors while leading the nation in strikeouts last season, improved to 5-1 with the win. In eight innings, he allowed three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out 10. Nick Vander Tuig pitched the ninth, allowing just a two-out single, for his third save.
UW reliever Tyler Kane (1-2) was saddled with the loss. He gave up two runs on one hit in his inning and two-thirds. Fellow freshmen Jeff Brigham and Zach Wright held the Bruins scoreless over the final two innings.
Washington got to Bauer in the first inning. With one out, Joe Meggs doubled down the left field line and Jacob Lamb was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, a passed ball allowed Meggs to score the game's opening run. Senior Troy Scott followed with a double to right, driving in Lamb to stake the Huskies to a 2-0 lead.
UCLA got one back in the second as Cody Keefer doubled and scored on a double from Trevor Brown, cutting the lead to 2-1.
In the third, the Bruins drew even at 2-2. Beau Amaral led off with a single. After moving to third on an error, he came home to tie the score on a double-play groundout.
Washington scored a run in similar fashion in the fifth as catcher B.K. Santy led off the inning with a double. Ty Afenir then reached when his sacrifice bunt attempt was mis-fielded by Bauer, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Brian Wolfe then bounced into a double play, but Santy scored from third to put the Huskies back in front, 3-2.
The Bruins tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. After getting runners to the corners on a double from Pat Valaika and a single from Jeff Gelalich, a balk allowed Valaika to score. After Valaika moved to third on a bunt, Kane came on in place of starter Jacob Clem and go the final two outs to preserve the tie.
UCLA took the lead for good in the sixth. After an out, Brown walked and Steve Rodriguez was hit a pitch. After a Kane balk, Valaika hit a single to left-center, scoring both runners to put the Bruins in front, 5-3.
Scott finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI, the lone Husky with multiple hits or a run batted in.
Washington and UCLA close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
