PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington baseball team got two key RBI from freshman pinch hitter Willy Reel and Jacob Clem provided six and two-thirds innings of relief as the Huskies beat Washington State, 6-5, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Clem (3-4), who recently returned after three weeks out with an injury, entered the game to begin the third inning. After allowing an unearned run that inning, he settled in, retiring 13 in a row at one point
Reel, a freshman from Mercer Island who was appearing in his first conference game, broke a 3-3 tie with a pinch-hit single in the seventh and then provided an insurance run in the ninth with a triple. Both hits came with two outs.
Trailing 6-3, the Cougars mounted a two-out rally in the ninth. With two outs and none on, Brett Jacobs reached on a throwing error and Collin Slaybaugh singled. Adam Nelubowich followed with a pinch-hit double down the left field line, scoring both runners to cut the lead to one run. Husky freshman Tyler Kane came on and induced a groundout to close it out and pick up a save.
Clem finished his day having allowed three runs, all unearned, on four hits while walking none and striking out five. The Huskies improved to 13-27 overall and 4-11 in the Pac-10. WSU fell to 19-20 overall and 5-13 in league play.
The teams traded runs in the opening frame. In the top of the first inning, Husky left fielder Joe Meggs singled and scored on a two-out double from Troy Scott. In the bottom of the inning, WSU's Cody Bartlett led off with a double and eventually scored on a two-out single from Taylor Ard, knotting the score at 1-1.
Jacobs, the Cougar designated hitter, led off the second inning with a solo homer, his second of the year, to give Washington State the lead at 2-1.
In the third, WSU added a third as Patrick Claussen reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundout from Ard.
Washington chipped away with a run in the fourth. Catcher B.K. Santy led off the inning with a double, took third on a single from Eric Peterson and scored on a Spencer Rogers sacrifice fly. In the fifth, the UW drew even at 3-3 as Jacob Lamb walked, stole second and scored on a single from Santy.
In the seventh, the Huskies, who had left 11 on base through the first six innings, finally broke through to take the lead as pinch hitter Reel drove a two-out single to right-center to score Ryan Wiggins from second base, putting the UW in front, 4-3.
Washington added what proved to be needed insurance in the ninth as Chase Anselment led off with a walk and eventually scored in a two-out single from Wiggins. Reel followed with a triple to right to send home Wiggins, upping the lead to 6-3.
WSU reliever Anthony Drobnick (0-1), who allowed a hit to the only batter he faced, took the loss as that batter ended up scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh.
The Huskies got three more hits from sophomore left fielder Joe Meggs, who finished the series with nine hits in 14 at bats.
Washington remains on the road next weekend as the Huskies travel face Stanford in a three-game series next Friday through Sunday.
