Dawgs Fall, 6-4, To No. 2 Beavers At Safeco

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team took No. 2 Oregon State down the wire, but the Beavers held out for a 6-4 win Friday night in front of 2,823 fans at Safeco Field.
The first-place Beavers, now two games ahead of Arizona State and UCLA in the Pac-10 standings, improved to 36-11 overall and 15-4 in the conference. Washington fell to 13-31, 4-15.
The Huskies led after both the third and fourth innings, but OSU answered each time.
Washington broke through for the game's first run in the third. Brendan Gardner-Young bunted his way aboard and stole second. Joe Meggs followed by lacing a double into the right-field corner, giving the Huskies a 1-0 edge.
UW freshman starter Tyler Kane had retired the first 10 OSU batters before Ryan Barnes bunted his way aboard with one out in the fourth. After taking second on a while pitch, Barnes scored when Kavin Keyes doubled down the left-field line. The Beavers grabbed a 2-1 lead as Barnes scored on a Carter Bell single.
The lead was very short-lived, however, as Husky catcher B.K. Santy deposited the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth over the left-field fence, his first homer of the year, knotting the score at 2-2. The Huskies then added two more runs as Ty Afenir, Gardner-Young and Jacob Lamb each double, the last two driving in runs, to make it a 4-2 Husky lead.
OSU answered quickly, however. Michael Miller reached on a one-out double in the fifth and, after Brian Stamps reached on a third-strike wild pitch, Barnes tripled to center, scoring the pair to tie the score. Keyes then send his second double of the night left, plating Barnes to make it a 5-4 Beavers score.
The Beavers tacked on a sixth run in the ninth when Barnes doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Keyes. Barnes finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.
OSU reliever Scott Schultz (3-0), who held the UW scoreless on one hit over two and two-thirds innings, picked up the victory. Tony Bryant pitched the ninth to pick up his 10th save.
UW reliever Jacob Clem (3-5) gave up three runs on five hits over three innings to take the loss. Kane, making his first start, allowed two runs on four hits over four innings.
Lamb and Gardner-Young each finished the game with two hits and an RBI for Washington.
The Huskies conclude the three-game series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Husky Ballpark. That's a change from the original schedule as Sunday's game was moved forward to avoid rain. Both games Saturday will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
