Dawgs Beat WSU, 4-2, In Front Of Packed House In Pasco

PASCO, Wash. - The Washington baseball team used four pitcher to hand Washington State a 4-2 loss Tuesday in a non-conference game in front of a standing-room crowd of 3,714 at Gesa Stadium.
The game, played at the home of the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League, was a non-league meeting between the cross-state rivals. The UW improved to 17-34 and WSU fell to 24-27.
Husky reliever Jeff Brigham (4-1) pitched a hitless fifth inning to pick up the victory in relief of fellow freshman Zach Wright, who went four innings in his first college start. Another freshman, Tyler Kane, pitched two innings and Adam Cimber worked the final two innings, fanning three, for his second save of the season.
WSU reliever Richie Ochoa gave up two runs in one inning for the loss to fall to 5-2.
Wright had struck out five in a row going into the third inning, but then ran into a little bit of trouble. With one out, Collin Slaybaugh singled for the Cougars and Trace Tam Sing followed with a double to deep left-center, driving in a run to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
James Wise, the WSU starter, had retired 13 in a row until UW shortstop Ty Afenir singled up the middle with two outs in the fifth. Reggie Jones followed by lining to shallow right. WSU right fielder Derek Jones appeared to have made a great diving catch, but the ball popped loose and Afenir just slid in at home ahead of a throw to the plate, tying the score at 1-1.
In the sixth, UW first baseman Troy Scott drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored when freshman DH Ryan Wiggins dropped a double down the right-field line to put the Huskies in front. A single from catcher B.K. Santy plated Wiggins, making it a 3-1 Husky lead.
WSU narrowed the gap in the bottom of the sixth. After singles from Nate Blackham and Derek Jones, a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. Blackham then scored on a ground ball from Taylor Ard, cutting the Husky lead to 3-2.
Washington added a fourth run in the ninth as Santy singled and eventually scored on a one-out single from Brendan Gardner-Young.
The Huskies close out the 2011 season this Friday through Sunday in a three-game series at Arizona.
