TUCSON, Ariz. - The Washington baseball team concluded the 2011 season with an 8-2 loss to Arizona Sunday at Kindall Field. Freshman Ryan Wiggins homered for the Huskies.
Senior Jacob Clem (4-6) suffered the loss for the Huskies despite allowing just two earned runs over four and one-third innings. Arizona reliever Bryce Bandilla, who came on with two on and no outs in the fifth, picked up the victory to improve to 5-3 on the season. He worked three and two-thirds scoreless innings.
Washington (17-37 overall, 6-21 in the Pac-10) opened the scoring with a run in the second. Senior Troy Scott, playing in final game as a Husky, opened the inning with a single. After moving to third on a wild pitch and a groundout, he scored on a two-out single from B.K. Santy.
However, Arizona (36-19 overall, 15-12 in the Pac-10) struck back quickly in the bottom of the second. Bobby Rinard led off by doubling down the left-field line. After moving up on a bunt, he scored from third on an Alex Mejia single, tying the score at 1-1.
Mejia then took second on a bunt, stole third and scored on an error and, after a second error kept the inning alive and put two runners on, Cole Frenzel singled home a third run and a triple from Robert Refsnyder brought in two more, giving the Wildcats a 5-1 lead.
In the fourth, Wiggins, the Huskies' freshman DH, led off with his second homer of season, cutting the lead to 5-2.
Arizona got that run back in the bottom of the fourth when Seth Mejias-Brean was hit by a pitch and eventually scored from third on a two-out single from Frenzel. In the fifth, the 'Cats added two more as Rinard led off with a double once again. He scored on an error and a single from Bryce Ortega later in the inning drove in another, stretching the lead to 8-2.
Frenzel and Rinard each finished the game with three hits for Arizona, with Frenzel driving in a pair. Nine different Huskies accounted for the team's 11 hits, led by two each from Santy and freshman right fielder Will Sparks.
While the Huskies' season has come to an end, the NCAA Regional field of 64 teams will be announced Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. PT on ESPN.
