Thomas Named Pac-12 Women's Golfer of the Month
GOLF, Ill. -- Arizona overcame a two-stroke deficit entering the final round of the Windy City Collegiate Championship on Tuesday to overtake Washington and deny the Huskies their quest for a second-straight tournament championship.
UW shot 15-over 303 in the final round to end up 19 over for the tournament at Glen View Club in Golf, Ill. The Huskies, ranked No. 1 by Golfweek and second by Golfstat.com, had to settle for second, four shots behind the Wildcats.
Host Northwestern was third at 20 over, followed by UC Davis (+21). Oklahoma State and Iowa State (+27) tied for fifth in the 15-team field.
Washington got off to a shaky start, combining to shoot 13 over through the first five holes. Coach Mary Lou Mulflur credited the rough start to nerves, and sure enough her team calmed down and closed out the front nine by combining to shoot 2 over through the final four holes.
The Huskies were much better on the back nine with the four counting scores adding up to 2 over. Unfortunately for the Dawgs, Arizona was 1-under over the final nine holes to sneak by the Huskies for the win.

"The difference was they had someone (Janie Jackson) shoot four under in the last seven holes," said Mulflur, who missed most of yesterday's first two rounds due to the flu. "We didn't have anyone do that...not even sniff it.
"Sometimes you just have to tip your cap and say they played better than we did."
Despite the loss, Mulflur was far from disappointed in her group. Her Husky five - consisting of three sophomores and two freshmen - narrowly missed making UW history. It has been 30 years since Washington has recorded back-to-back team titles, and the young Huskies almost pulled it off in a field laced with talented teams.
"They are a resilient group and they fought hard," Mulflur said of her team. "We are just going to try and learn every week. You win some and you lose some, so if we just keep learning, we'll be fine.
Sophomore Jennifer Yang ended up leading the Huskies by tying for eighth among 81 individual competitors. The Canadian ended up 2 over for both the day and the tournament at the par-72 course outside of Chicago. Considering she was 5 over after five holes, her end result was quite impressive.
"I was really proud of her," said Mulflur of the resilient Yang, who ended up shooting 3 under during the final 13 holes.
SooBin Kim also had a gritty performance in Chicago. The sophomore ended up tied for 17th, second among Huskies, despite playing with a huge gash on her left thumb. Kim was forced to use a modified grip to compensate for the injury and ended up at +6.
Washington's freshman duo of Charlotte Thomas and Ying Luo tied for 23rd at 8-over 224. Thomas, the Pac-12 Golfer of the Month for September, shot 75 on Tuesday, while Luo shot 78.
Sophomore Cyd Okino ended up tied for 55th at +16. She opened with a 1-under 71, but shot 80-81 in the final two rounds.
"There was just so much good that came out of this week," is how Mulflur summed up the tournament, "We have some things to work on for sure, but they know that and they are willing to do the hard work and put in the time."
April McCoy of TCU won the tournament at 2-under 214. She shot 69 on Tuesday, the low-round of the day.
Demi Runas of UC Davis and Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame were the only other golfers to finish under par. They tied for second at 1 under.
Washington returns to action next week when they host the 31st Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days from Monday, Oct. 8 through Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish. Admission to the tournament is free.
