Huskies 4-0 After Shutout

SEATTLE - The Huskies improved to 4-0 on the season with a 2-0 win over La Salle in the 2012 home opener Friday night in game two of the Husky/Nike Invitational. La Salle suffered its first loss to fall to 2-1-0.
Junior Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) scored the game winner in the fourth minute, her third goal of the season. Sophomore Chelsea Archer (Oakland, Calif.) was credited with the assist. Elston headed the ball in to the right side of the goal.
Even with that early lead, La Salle never backed down and made the Huskies work every minute after. The Huskies added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute as junior Hillary Zevenbergen (Woodway, Wash.) scored her first goal of the season, also on a header, on a long cross from Elston.
"I was really happy to get the early goal to sort of take the pressure off," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "I thought it would settle us down a little more. I thought we stayed a little jumpy for longer than I would have liked."
UW outshot La Salle 14-11 and won the corner kicks, 4-1. Zevenbergen and junior Allie Beahan (Sammamish, Wash.) took a team-high four shots each.
While La Salle kept putting the pressure on the Huskies, the UW defense was solid, forcing the Explorers to take long shots. Senior goalkeeper Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) worked hard in the goal and made three saves.
Washington had several other great chances on goal that were saved by La Salle's keeper, Gabby Pakhtigian, who made several key saves, diving and jumping all around the post.
"I was pleased with the crowd tonight and pleased with our effort," Gallimore added. "La Salle was exactly as we had expected. They were very athletic and hard working. I'm pleased. Obviously, we are pleased with the record and pleased with the shutout. This team has been really impressive as far as how they have been able to stay focused. So now we put this one behind us and get ready for Fresno State on Sunday."
In game of one of the Husky/Nike Invitational No. 20 Portland defeated Fresno State, 5-0. La Salle and Portland will play Sunday at 11 a.m. followed by Fresno State and Washington at 1:30 p.m.
