SEATTLE – The Washington defense clamped the Maryland attack all night long, while Maylen Montoya and Angelica Chou delivered a goal on either side of the halftime whistle as the No. 12 Huskies opened Big Ten play with a 2-0 win Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.

Dominating possession all match long, the Dawgs peppered the Maryland goal mouth with 14 shots, putting eight on goal. On the other end, the Terrapins managed just two shots on the night, neither of which tested Husky keeper Tanner Ijams.

Montoya opened scoring for the Huskies in the 23^rd minute, meeting her own rebound off a deflected pass and meeting the ball with her right foot, hitting side netting from 22 yards out to put Washington up 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.

The Huskies remained on the offensive, with Chou doubling the advantage in the 56^th minute. Driving past two defenders from the left wing, the NorCal striker's bending shot was tucked neatly between the outstretched hands of keeper Faith Luckey and the woodwork, caroming off the far post and in to make it 2-0 UW.

UW continued to control possession throughout the rest of the match, neutralizing any attacking threat from Maryland to sit tied at the top of the Big Ten table after the opening match of the conference season.

Washington continues Big Ten action on Sunday at home, hosting Rutgers for a 1:00 p.m. PT kickoff. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a custom Hispanic Heritage Month hat, while the Huskies will be signing postgame autographs.
