LOGAN, Utah - A Lindsay Elston penalty kick in the 85th minute tied the game for the Huskies at Utah State in Logan, Utah Thursday night. After 110 minutes and two overtime periods, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The No. 23/18 ranked Huskies are 7-0-1 on the season while the Aggies are 5-1-3 after the match.
"It was about what we expected as far as the ability of Utah State," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "They are very good and athletic. We talked a lot about how to handle that, particularly with a big field and the altitude. I think they try to catch teams coming in here. I really think we prepared well for it. We didn't do ourselves any favors the first half. It was more like a track meet. It was way to up and down. Kari (Davidson) made two great saves on breakaways and kept us in it at the half."
After a pretty even and scoreless first half, Utah State took the lead in the 59th minute. Jennifer Flynn, who was dangerous around the goal the entire game for Utah State, scored the games' first goal on a scramble in the box.
Near desperation time, the Huskies got a break as junior Annie Sittauer drew a hard foul on the left side of the box which resulted in a penalty kick for Washington.
Elston, the junior from Sammamish, Wash., took the PK and made her sixth goal of the season in the upper left corner of the net in the 85th minute.
"The second half was a different story," Gallimore continued. "We played much better in possession in the second half, knocked the ball around and created some things. They (Utah State) scored on a ball Kari made a save on and it was a good hustle by them to score on the deflection. We were really gritty and tough to battle back. Annie got into the box and the foul was clear. Elston hammered the PK home which was great."
Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the teams played two golden goal 10-minute overtime periods. The Aggies had several good opportunities to win the game in the final minute of the first OT off of corners, but were just high over the net or punched out by Washington goalkeeper Kari Davidson.
Washington had the majority of its chances to win in the second overtime.
"It OT both teams had chances but Utah State plays very direct and it was tough to defend against," Gallimore said. "Our team did a good job. We have to do ourselves more of a favor in a similar situation on Saturday. I'm proud of our kids, keeping the clean record. A tie against a team that is always a conference contender isn't a bad thing. We are going to hold our heads up and know we have a great challenge going to BYU, one of the toughest places to play in college soccer."
Davidson, a senior from Portland, Ore., made nine total saves in the game, playing all 110 minutes in goal.
Utah State took 21 shots in the game and Washington had 16. Elston had eight of the Husky shots.
In goal for the Aggies, Ashlyn Mulford made three saves. The Aggies won the corners, 8-3.
Washington will remain in Utah and head to Provo to face No. 17 BYU on Saturday night at 6 p.m. PT.
