SEATTLE - The Portland baseball team beat Washington, 4-2, Tuesday in a rain-shortened, six-inning game at Husky Ballpark Tuesday.
The game, which was played almost entirely under at least light rain, included a 44-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth the umpires officially put an end to it after the bottom of the sixth. It will go as a full, official game and will not be continued later.
Pilots starter Matt McCallister (1-1) pitched five innings for the win, allowing only an unearned run on three hits. Colin Feldtman pitched the sixth to pick up a save, allowing one run. UW starter Tyler Davis (0-3) took the loss, giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits in three innings.
Portland (7-13) took a 2-0 lead by scoring two in the third inning without a hit. After two outs, Kramer Scott reached on an error. After a walk, Beau Fraser hit a ground ball to third that looked to end the inning, but a second error allowed Scott to score. Cody Lenahan, who had walked and taken third on the error, then came in on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the third, the UW answered with one run. Ty Afenir reached on an errant throw after laying down a bunt. After a bunt and a single from Andrew Ely moved him to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly from Jayce Ray to cut the Pilots lead to 2-1.
In the fourth, Portland's Ben Grubb doubled and took third on a single from Nick Armenta. Michael Lucarelli then put down a squeeze bunt and Grubb just beat the throw home, pushing the lead to 3-1.
In an inning that included the rain delay, the Pilots added a fourth. With a runner at second and two outs before the delay, Portland had three straight batters draw walks after the resumption of play, with a free pass to Scott forcing in a fourth UP run.
The Huskies (4-15) got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as a bases-loaded groundout from freshman Braden Bishop brought home a run, but the game ended after the third out was made in the inning.
Next up for Washington is a three-game series this weekend vs. USC at Husky Ballpark. PLEASE NOTE that the times have changed for two of the three games. Friday's game, now at 6:00 p.m., will air live on the Pac-12 Networks. Saturday's game is still at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday's game has been moved up to a 12:00 noon start.
