Great weekend! I can honestly say that our team grows each and every day. This past weekend we had our last road trip in Denver, Colorado where we played the University of Denver and Air Force. Coming off a great win last weekend in California gave our team the confidence that we needed to take on two strong opponents. Not only dealing with playing away was the altitude factor that would make things a bit tougher.
Denver was our first match and they were probably the better of the two teams we would play. The field was probably one of the largest fields I have played on in my four years. Denver's style of play consisted of a lot of overlapping with a combination of high pressure which can make things difficult if you're not ready for it. The match was a battle back and fourth until finally Evan Cummings got slipped in by Ely Allen and laid a ball to Leo Totev who scored the first goal of the match. Our defense held strong as Derek Crismier made two sliding saves with an open net. The second half we battled and played stronger as a group. Jo Jo Katz came on and scored our second goal which locked up the match for us. It was a great team win with the help of almost all 20 players who came on and made a difference for our team.
Sunday was a match we knew little about the opposing Air Force team. The only thing in our mind was the fact that we had a job to do and that we had only completed half the task of coming out to Denver. The match was similar to Denver but we took a goal early off a corner. We continued to play well and didn't manage to score a goal. It just seemed that every ball was bouncing in their favor.
The second half we came out hungry and determined. We played well but couldn't score. Finally as time began to fade away we got the equalizer as I crossed over a defender and crossed the ball into the box where Nick Loveless was and the ball deflected off their defender and went in the net. It was magic and with only about 7 minutes left in the match we began our comeback. Soon after the goal Brett Hite was put through and finished the equalizing goal with only 4 minutes left. As we continued to press the match Spencer Schmidt found himself on the weak side with nobody on him and went to goal and scored the game winner with only two minutes left. It was an amazing win!
I'm very proud of our whole team for that match against Air Force and D.U. These matches proved that our team depth is going to take us farther than we have ever gone this year as a team. Our team showed great character in the match today never dropping their heads and always believing.
