PORTLAND, Ore. - Washington freshman Matt Lunde turned in a strong debut performance, but it came too late as Portland scored eight early runs to beat the Husky baseball team, 9-3, in the UW's final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field.
Portland (18-32) scored four runs each in the first and second innings and was never really threatened after that. Washington fell to 19-31.
UP freshman Jackson Lockwood (1-0) picked up the win in his second start. He gave up one run on three hits in his seven innings. UW starter Dae Yang Kim, making his starting debut after nine prior relief outings this season, took the loss, giving up four runs in one inning.
Lunde, a lefty from Skyline High, came on to begin the third inning and retired the first nine batters he faced. In the end, he pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Kim struggled with his command in the first, walking the first two batters of the game on eight pitches. Ben Grubb followed by lacing a double into the left-field corner, driving home both runners. After moving to third on a flyout, Grubb scored on a single from Caleb Whalen, who stole second and scored on a Zack McCoy single to stake the Pilots to a 4-0 lead.
In the second, with two on, the Pilots got back-to-back triples from Kramer Scott and Grubb before a sacrifice fly brought home Grubb to increase the lead to 8-0.
Washington got on the board in the third inning. Senior shortstop Ty Afenir walked to lead off the inning and then eventually scored on a single from Robert Pehl.
The Pilots added a ninth run in the sixth as Nick Armenta's RBI single brought home Bo Cornish. Washington notched two more runs in the eighth when Andrew Ely singled and scored on a long double from Pehl. Pehl came in on a groundout from Brian Wolfe.
Pehl finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Washington.
Next for the Huskies is a three-game series vs. Washington State. The series will be played at GESA Stadium in Pasco, Wash., this Friday through Sunday.
