Meggs' 11th-Inning Hit Leads UW Over ASU, 8-7

SEATTLE - Senior Joe Meggs' 11th-inning, two-out single drove in Michael Camporeale from second as the Washington baseball team edged 19th-ranked Arizona State, 8-7, Friday at Husky Ballpark.
Washington (23-31 overall, 14-14 in the Pac-12) trailed 4-0, but scored five in the fifth to go in front. The Huskies also came back from a 6-5 deficit with a run in the eighth, forcing extra innings, and then had to score a run in the 10th to get it to the 11th.
With one out in the 11th, Camporeale walked and stole second base. After a popout and a walk put runners at first and second with two down, Meggs lined a single to center, with Camporeale crossing the plate well ahead of the throw home to win the game.
UW reliever Trevor Dunlap (3-4) went three and two-thirds innings for the victory, allowing one run. Josh McAlister (0-1), who came on to begin the 11 for ASU, took the loss.
After both teams were retired in order in the first, the Devils (34-19-1 overall, 15-13 Pac-12) racked up five hits in the second. After a pair of singles and a popout, Drew Stankiewicz singled to load the bases. Dalton DiNatale singled to drive in one and Jake Peevyhouse followed with a double down the right-field line, plating two more. Michael Benjamin's sacrifice fly capped the scoring with ASU in front, 4-0.
The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second, but didn't push across a run until the fifth. With one out, the UW loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Jayce Ray then hit a grounder to short, but beat out the would-be, double-play throw to first, plating a run on the fielder's choice. Camporeale then dropped a single just over the head of the shortstop into shallow left, bringing home another.
After Camporeale stole second base, Husky second baseman Robert Pehl lined a single to right, scoring both runners to tie the game at 4-4. First baseman Brian Wolfe capped the rally with a double to the gap in left-center scoring Pehl from first to put the Huskies in front, 5-4.
In the sixth, ASU designated hitter Nathaniel Causey led off with a double. After taking third on a fly to right, he scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 5-5.
In the eighth, Causey walked to lead off for ASU. Pinch runner Tucker Esmay then moved to second on a bunt and to third on a single before a DiNatale flyout to deep left was enough to bring him in, putting ASU back in front at 6-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, UW senior Ty Afenir led off with a walk. He took second on a bunt and then scored from second on a single from third baseman Andrew Ely, once again knotting the score at 6-6.
In the 10th, ASU pinch hitter, RJ Ybarra stepped up with one out and none on, and hit the first pitch he saw into the left-field bullpen, his fifth homer of the season.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Huskies were given an opening as Parker Guinn was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Pinch runner Braden Bishop moved to second on a bunt and then stole third with one out. On a 3-2 pitch, Erik Forgione tapped a slow roller between the mound and first and, with no chance to come home in time, ASU settled for the out at first with Bishop scoring to tie it at 7-7.
Pehl and Meggs each notched three hits for Washington while ASU got three from Peevyhouse.
