Huskies Post 5-2 Win Over Portland at Home
March 14, 2015 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE - The University of Washington women's tennis team added another win to bump their winning streak to five Friday afternoon as they defeated the University of Portland, 5-2 at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Dawgs are now 8-4 on the season.
The Huskies didn't get started the way they would have liked as they lost the doubles point. On court three, Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora won their match against Portland's Emily Gould and Amanda Zuidema in a 6-2 decision. However, the Huskies could not capitalize, as they lost matches on courts one and two. Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu fought hard, but ultimately fell short in a 7-5 decision. On court two, Angela Chen and Miki Kobayashi lost 6-4.
“There was a little bit of a slow start at doubles, but I was really impressed with the singles and how we came out and just took care of business from the beginning to the end," head coach Robin Stephenson said. "I thought the girls brought a lot of energy and fight. They worked and did the things we have been doing in practice. Even though we had a little bit of a slow start, we finished strong and that's what it's all about.”
Washington stepped up their game in singles play, winning five out of the six matches. The Dawgs quickly evened the score at one-all when Kobayashi claimed her match against Portland's Jelena Lazarevic in a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Shortly after, the Huskies added two more points to improve their lead to four to one. On court two, Ysidora defeated Portland's Maja Mladenovic handily in a 6-3, 6-3 decision, followed by Shimizu's win over Portland's Saroop Dhatt 6-2, 6-1.
The only Huskies' loss in singles play came at number one singles. Douglas-Miron lost to Portland's Lucia Butkovska 5-7, 2-6.
The Huskies play again on Sunday, March 15th at noon, when they host non-conference opponent Boise State to wrap up the weekends matches.
“The goal is to keep getting better each match," Stephenson said. "I wanted to feel like we have gotten better since Washington State on Friday, and I feel like we did in singles for sure. With Boise State coming up, we obviously have a good winning streak going on at home, and we want to keep that going. It is important for us to come out and play better doubles on Sunday and keep doing what we are doing in singles.”
