SEATTLE - The top-25 matches keep coming quickly for the Husky volleyball team as a span of four matches in eight days wraps up with the Oregon schools visiting Alaska Airlines Arena. Wednesday night, the No. 14 Dawgs and No. 15 Ducks go toe to toe at 7 p.m. live on Pac-12 Networks. The week wraps with Oregon State coming in this Friday for a 7 p.m. match that will not be televised but will be streamed on GoHuskies.com.
The Oregon match will be the fifth-straight top-25 opponent for the Huskies, who have gone 2-2 in the previous four. Washington is now 14-3 on the year and 4-2 in Pac-12 play, having had to cope with several injuries and different lineups along the way. Last week, in a five set classic against Utah that saw UW fall two points short, and a three set win over Colorado, Washington used a 6-2 rotation for the first time this year, with Jade Finau and Natalie Robinson setting three rotations each with Bailey Tanner out with a broken finger. Tia Scambray moved from libero back to outside hitter and led the Huskies for the weekend with 30 kills. Meanwhile, freshman Lauren Sanders had a huge performance in both matches and was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the first time, as she hit .667 with 25 kills and 1 error over the two matches.
The Ducks are 10-4 on the year and 3-3 in conference play, having split all three weeks thus far, getting wins over Oregon State, Utah, and California, and falling to UCLA, Colorado, and Stanford. Oregon currently is No. 8 in the NCAA RPI. Junior outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide leads the offense with 3.34 kills per set, eighth in the Pac-12, while sophomore Ronika Stone is hitting .350 on the year to rank sixth and she also has a team-leading 17 aces. Oregon runs a 6-2 offense with senior Maggie Scott posting 6.26 assists per set and junior August Raskie averaging 5.04. Sophomore Willow Johnson (2.74 kills/.302) and senior Taylor Agost (2.56 kills/.298) are also big producers for UO. Matt Ulmer is in his first year as head coach at Oregon. The Huskies and Ducks split their two meetings last year, each winning on the other's home court.
Oregon State picked up its first Pac-12 win with a sweep of California last Friday before dropping to No. 2 Stanford to go to 1-5 in conference and 11-7 overall. The Beavers did push then-No. 1 Minnesota to four sets and nearly went five on the road at USC. Senior Mary-Kate Marshall is second in the Pac-12 with 4.57 kills per set and she also serves tough, averaging 0.38 aces per set. Junior libero Kayla Ellis ranks sixth in the league with 3.66 digs per set and junior middle Maddy Gravley has 1.24 blocks per set to rank eighth. OSU is hitting .261 on the season and holding opponents to a .200 mark but so far in Pac-12 play they are being outhit, .217 to .257. Mark Barnard is in his second season at the helm of the Beavers. Washington has a lengthy 27-match win streak in the series.
