Brackets Unveiled For Pac-12 Championships
April 26, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE - The second-annual Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships are set to begin this week on the campus of the University of Arizona, Thursday-Saturday, April 27-29. Washington was given the number seven seed based on a vote by the Pac-12 coaches, and will match up with No. 2 UCLA in the first round this Thursday at 10 a.m.
In addition to the team tournament, the pairs championship will take place as well, with two teams from all nine Pac-12 squads taking place. Juniors Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones were seeded No. 4 overall in the Pac-12, while senior Cassie Strickland and junior Courtney Schwan are seeded 12th.
The tournaments will be played at the Arizona Beach Volleyball Courts. All 16 matches of the team championship will be televised live on Pac-12 Network with Anne Marie Anderson, Holly McPeak, Kevin Wong and Kevin Barnett calling all the action.
Thursday the focus will be all on team competition as Washington (7-5) opens up play against UCLA (26-3), the No. 2 seed in the tourney and No. 2-ranked team in the NCAA. The Huskies faced the Bruins earlier this season, dropping a 4-1 decision, getting a win at the No. 2 spot. Two rounds in the championship bracket will be played on Thursday, but due to the unbalanced bracket with nine teams, and matches in the contender's bracket, some teams could play three or even four matches on Thursday. Friday will have the semifinal and final rounds of the team competition, with the finals set for 1 p.m.
The pairs competition will start on Friday with opening round play. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and the finals will all take place on Saturday, Apr. 29. Jones and Scambray, who moved up from 10th in last year's pairs seedings to No. 4 this year, will open up against Stanford's Vanjak/Chang. Jones and Scambray are 10-1 as a duo this season, with wins over Pac-12 No. 1 teams from Arizona, Oregon, California, and Stanford, their only loss coming against UCLA. Despite playing with different partners in the team bracket, Strickland and Schwan will play the pairs tourney together again. They are 4-3 as a duo this year, and will open against No. 5 seeds the Witt twins from Arizona. If both Husky teams win their openers they would face each other in the quarterfinals.
Last season the Huskies were also seeded seventh, losing to UCLA in the opening round before winning twice in the contender's bracket to make the final day of team competition, finishing fourth overall behind USC, Arizona, and UCLA.
