Summer Softball: Update From Jenn Salling
July 13, 2017 | Softball
This summer eight former, current and future Huskies are representing six different teams across the world. Former UW All-America shortstop Jenn Salling just finished up her World Cup of Softball with the Canadian National Team and has headed home to the Vancouver, BC., area (Softball City in Surrey, BC) for the Canada Cup. Here's her informative recap of her summer so far:
Hey Dawg Fans,
Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their summer so far!! First, I just wanted to thank you all for your love and support. Being a member of the University of Washington Softball family has truly been a blessing and without a doubt has carved me into the person I am today. I recently just graduated from the College of Education as a graduate student at the University of Washington. My degree is a Master's of Education in Leadership and Policy studies with a concentration in collegiate coaching. My goodness, what a powerful experience the last two years have been!! I want to thank Coach Tarr for allowing me the opportunity to be apart of her staff and continue to grow as a person and a professional in the collegiate coaching field.
Since graduating on June 10th, I was in Florida and South Carolina enjoying some down time before reporting to the Canadian National Team Selection Camp on June 21st. Our selection camp was a week long and held in Toronto. Shortly after camp, the 2017 roster was picked. We have such a wonderful group. I am so happy to be back with my roots. There is truly something about being around those that share the same citizenship. I feel so honored to be among one of the veterans of this group because of how much I believe in and love every single human that gets to wear the maple leaf. I am proud of our culture and what our team stands for. The character that this group shows every single day continues to amaze me and I am so fortunate to be around this group of people daily.
From the selection camp, our National Team took a road trip to play the National Professional Fastpitch Team, the Chicago Bandits. It was fun being back at Rosemont Stadium again as I have experienced many amazing memories at that ballpark. The Bandits series was our first time playing together as team. While a group of us have been playing together for quite some time now, there are also many currently on the roster that are experiencing wearing the maple leaf for the very first time. Speaking of wearing the maple leaf for the first time, 1) people always talk about the feeling never getting old, and it really is true 2) our newcomers are so awesome. They're all in, bought in, committed, sponges to information, selfless … all the above. Can't wait to see what they continue to bring to our team both on and off the field.
We just finished the World Cup in Oklahoma City. My goodness, does that stadium ever bring back so many memories!! From winning the National Championship in 2009, to my experiences with National Team and one of my most recent memories was attending the WCWS as a staff member. We had a really great week as team. We ended up securing the bronze medal by beating Australia 3-0. Throughout the week our offense was absolutely on fire as we had 79 hits in 8 games!! I was proud of the way our team got better each day. We are working so hard to continue to live out our culture's expectations and standards every day and through the week we absolutely did just that. The challenge now is how to be consistent; being so bought into the culture that the behavior is just who you are and what you do on a daily basis. Our offense was absolutely on fire as we had 79 hits in 8 games!!
As I write this, we are currently at the Denver airport heading to Vancouver, BC, for the Canada Cup. It was an early one! I set my alarm for 2:45 a.m., we loaded the vans at 3:45 a.m. to make it in time for our flight at 6:30am. Personally, the Canada Cup has always been my favorite event of the summer. Not only because we get to play on home soil in front of our fellow Canadians, family and loved ones, but because of the atmosphere that is created at Softball City. The Canada Cup committee, specifically Greg Timm and many others put on such an amazing event and we are so thankful for all the time and energy that they all (including the volunteers) put into making the week one to definitely remember.
We are looking forward to an awesome week at the Canada Cup! As always, thank you for all your love and support!!
Go Dawgs,
