SEATTLE - Back in action for week two and back at home in Alaska Airlines Arena, Washington Volleyball will look to gain some momentum this weekend before embarking on a lengthy road stretch of nine matches over four weeks. The Huskies welcome in Santa Clara this Friday, Sept. 1, for a 7 p.m. match and on Saturday UW will play Seattle U. at 12 noon then return to the court at 7 p.m. to face Cal Poly.
The Huskies opened the season last week with sweeps over Pitt and Saint Mary's but were upset by No. 9 Creighton in four sets in their most recent match, with UW consequently dropping from No. 3 to No. 8 in the AVCA top-25 this week. Washington fans got a first look at three new Dawgs plus several Huskies moving into new roles. Freshman Lauren Sanders had a strong first weekend, starting each match, and was named to the All-Tournament Team with an average of 2.30 kills per set, 2.00 blocks per set, and a .354 attack percentage. Senior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood also made her Husky debut and averaged 1.86 kills and 1.71 blocks per set, while freshman setter Natalie Robinson subbed in one match to serve.
Senior Tia Scambray impressed in the starting libero role for the first time, with 4.00 digs per set, and she also had six aces over the weekend, passing the 100 career aces mark in the process. Kara Bajema made a good first impression at outside hitter, averaging 3.00 kills per set, with a very strong third and fourth sets against Creighton. Carly DeHoog also saw an increased role and delivered a career-high eight blocks vs. Pitt and a career-high 13 kills vs. Creighton to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Santa Clara is off to a 2-1 start as it posted two five set wins over American University and Georgetown to start, then had a 3-1 loss to Howard last week in Washington D.C. Sophomore OH Michelle Gajdka is leading the offense thus far with 3.43 kills per set with senior MB Jensen Cunningham posting 2.43 kills per set at a .263 percentage. Senior setter Kirsten Mead is averaging 8.57 assists per set and libero Tatiana San Juan's 3.29 digs leads the team. Mead was a preseason All-WCC Team selection and Santa Clara was picked fifth in the WCC preseason poll. Jon Wallace has led the Broncos for 19 seasons. The Huskies won the last meeting in 2008 and lead the series, 3-1.
The Redhawks of Seattle are 1-2, defeating Loyola Chicago in their opener then falling 0-3 to UC Irvine and 1-3 to California in Berkeley last week. Sophomore Katarina Marinkovic posted 40 kills over the three matches for a 3.64 kills per set average while Katarina Glavinic hit .500 with 21 kills and just four errors on 34 swings. Shae Harris averaged 9.18 assists per set and Tijana Milojevic had 3.73 digs per set and four aces last week. Marinkovic was the 2016 WAC Freshman of the Year and she and junior middle Maja Stojanovic were named Preseason All-WAC and Seattle U was picked fifth in the WAC preseason poll. James Finley is in his fifth year at Seattle. The Huskies lead the series, 10-0.
Cal Poly has swept its first three matches against Dayton, High Point, and Northern Illinois. The Mustangs got a big boost this year in Torrey Van Winden, a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team pick last year at UCLA, who transferred and now plays with her sister Adlee Van Winden. Adlee had 5.11 kills per set in the opening weekend, hitting .353, and Torrey had 3.89 per set, hitting .355, as Cal Poly hit .336 as a team in the opening weekend. Senior middle Savannah Niemen also hit .560 last week with 2.57 kills per set and Taylor Nelson averaged 12.11 assists per set. Cal Poly was picked second in the Big West Preseason Poll behind Hawaii. The Huskies have never beaten Cal Poly though the teams have not played since 1982.
