Washington Sweeps Boise State In Home Opener
March 29, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – A solid top-to-bottom 5-0 victory for the Husky Beach Volleyball squad was the perfect way to kick off their home schedule at the Husky Beach Courts today. Washington took care of Boise State in the first of what is scheduled to be four meetings between the teams this year.
On an overcast but dry day, Head Coach Steve Whitaker was in a sunny mood after the win. "I think today we showed a good baseline of what we can do," Whitaker said. "We get to play Boise State three more times, and I think if that's our baseline and we can get one-percent better each time then that's what we're looking for. I'm pretty proud of the way that we competed. Our goal is to control what we can control no matter who's on the other side of the net and I thought we did that today."
The four and five matches were up first. UW's fourth pair of Anna Crabtree and Natalie Robinson made the key plays late in each set to grab a 21-19, 21-16 win over Johnson/Watkins of Boise State. At No. 5, Kara Bajema and Emma Calle came back from a first set loss to beat Hanses/Southwick, 17-21, 21-12, 15-11, and give UW a 2-0 lead.
Washington clinched quickly thanks to Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson at the No. 3 spot, as they had the day's quickest win, beating the combo of Allen/Bulda, 21-9, 21-13.
Next up was the match on court one, as senior transfers Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner played their first home match as Dawgs. They made it a successful one with matching 21-17 set wins over Walley/Roberts.
Wrapping things up was the No. 2 duo of Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye, who took care of business against BSU's Langley/Lewis, 21-14, 21-15.
The Huskies (4-6) and Broncos will have a quick rematch tomorrow at 12 noon, before the Dawgs take on the Portland Pilots at 3 p.m. to finish up their short homestand.
