Dawgs Sweep Double-Header Over Broncos, Pilots
March 30, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – The Husky Beach Volleyball team rolled to two more victories today over Boise State and Portland, winning all 10 pairs at the Husky Beach Courts to get its record back to .500 on the season at 6-6. The matches were the final on-campus home matches for the Dawgs this season as their remaining home matches in two weeks will take place at Alki Beach.
The Huskies first knocked off Boise State by a 5-0 count for the second day in a row, with two more meetings against the Broncos still to come later this season in Boise. Washington then shut out the Pilots, with three wins coming in third sets.
Head Coach Steve Whitaker was able to mix and match a bit at the No. 5 spot today, playing recent transfer Samantha Drechsel along with Chloe Newton in that spot in the first match, then teaming Drechsel with Kara Bajema for the first time in the second match. Both came out with wins.
"We wanted to give chances for both Sam and Chloe and I thought they stepped up and did a great job, and then we tried Sam and Kara together and I thought they responded really well," said Whitaker. "We're trying some new things and trying to make our team one through five the best we can."
Next week the Huskies travel to Honolulu to face Loyola Marymount for the second time this season, Utah, and then Hawaii.
"We've got our work cut out for us, for sure," said Whitaker. "Hawaii's beat some of the top teams. Our main thing right now is the one-percent, every time we come out on the beach we've got to get one-percent better. If we keep our head down and don't get too distracted by who's on the other side of the net, we can do that. It's an awesome opportunity to play some really good opponents in a really cool place."
Match 1
Facing the Broncos for the second straight day, the Huskies got a point on the board early as Anna Crabtree and Natalie Robinson beat Johnson and Watkins at the No. 4 spot, 21-12, 21-17. Drechsel and Newton then earned a win in their first official match together, winning 21-14, 19-21, 15-10 at the No. 5 spot over Hanses and Southwick.
Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson dominated their No. 3 match to clinch the dual, as they sided out at a hundred percent in a 21-7, 21-7 win over Allen/Bulda.
Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye had a solid 21-16, 21-13 win at the No. 2 spot for the fourth point, and then Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner regrouped after dropping a tight second set and finished off the sweep with a third set win in the No. 1 match, beating Walley/Roberts 21-18, 22-24, 15-9.
Kara Bajema and Emma Calle also won their exhibition match in straight sets.
Match 2
The Huskies were back in action less than an hour after the Boise State win to take on the Pilots. Starting with the four and five matches once again, the pair of Crabtree/Robinson again posted a fast first point, winning 21-11, 21-11 over Kassidy Naone and Lauren Naatz.
Drechsel, now teaming with Bajema, got another three-set win at No. 5 to make it 2-0 Dawgs. They defeated Liz Reich and McKenzie Schwan, Courtney's younger sister, 20-22, 21-9, 15-10.
DeHoog and McPherson clinched for the third match in a row, defeating Williams/Savoca at the No. 3 position, 21-15, 21-17.
Both of the top two matches were extended to third sets by a determined Portland squad, but the Huskies bounced back in both to secure the sweep.
Anderson and Gardiner turned back the Portland pair of Tani Stephens and Cali Thompson, 21-15, 11-21, 15-12. Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye then dominated their third set to finish it off at No. 2. They topped Robinson/Barker, 21-19, 19-21, 15-4.
