SEATTLE - It might not seem like beach weather this week in Seattle, but that has never stopped the Husky Beach Volleyball team, which is set to make its 2018 home debut this Thursday and Friday at the Husky Beach Courts. A pair of Northwest rivals, comfortable with some PNW springtime weather, will be on hand to challenge the Dawgs who are looking to climb back towards the .500 mark as they wrap up the first month of the season.
The Huskies will be facing Portland and Boise State this Thursday and Friday, with UW facing the Broncos at 3 p.m. on Thursday, and on Friday it will be a double-header with UW and Boise State playing once again at 12 noon, then the Huskies and Pilots facing off at 3 p.m. Also Thursday at noon, UP and BSU will kick things off.
Through nine matches the Huskies are 3-6, but with a big win over currently No. 16 Loyola Marymount, and a close 3-2 loss to 15th-ranked Arizona. Washington dropped four matches at the Pac-12 South Invitational last weekend in Santa Monica, Calif. but were competitive in all matches and dealt with windy conditions for the first time this year. Over the past two seasons, UW has proven to make substantial improvements from the start of the season to the end, so the Huskies will look to continue that trend as they move through their most extensive match schedule in program history.
Washington has been strongest at the top of the lineup, as the Huskies are 5-4 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Those spots all year have been Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner at No. 1 and Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye at No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Shayne McPherson and Carly DeHoog also has a 4-5 record thus far. Six new players have found their way into the lineup for the Huskies this year: Anderson and Gardiner, Natalie Robinson, Kara Bajema, Emma Calle, and Chloe Newton.
Boise State has played just four matches so far this season and has yet to get in the win column, with two losses to Pac-12 opponents in California and Stanford. The Huskies and Broncos played twice last year, with the Huskies winning both in Seattle, and once back in 2014, the inaugural season, when UW played just two matches, one a loss to the Broncos.
Portland comes in with a 2-3 record and is coming off a 4-1 victory over Oregon in its last match. Washington and Portland have met once before, with UW winning 5-0 in its 2017 season opener. Husky senior Courtney Schwan will get to see her younger sister, McKenzie, who is a freshman for the Pilots, although they likely will not get to go head-to-head this week.
