Beach Dawgs Beat Ducks, Fall To Cardinal
April 15, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – Washington wrapped up the first Pac-12 North Invitational with a 2-2 record, getting a sweep over Oregon to start the second day today at Alki Beach but then falling to No. 14 Stanford by a 4-1 decision. The Huskies (10-11) stayed dry today unlike Saturday, but fierce winds made for a very cold day at the beach.
"We need to practice out here a bit more often and get used to playing in the wind because Stanford look a little more crisp in the conditions in our second match today," said Head Coach Steve Whitaker. Still, the Huskies came out of the weekend feeling like they were right there with some of the conference's best teams with two weeks to go until the Pac-12 Championships. That was proved by California upsetting No. 4 USC today after the Huskies upset Cal on Saturday.
"It's been a trait of ours at Washington, since we have a big crossover from indoors to the beach, since it takes a while to get your sand legs and get the rhythm of the beach, we've played our best at the end of the season. We're just worried about the improvement and it's been showing in our play."
Vs. Oregon
The Huskies took care of Oregon without dropping a set. Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner were first two finish at the No. 1 spot, 21-14, 21-10 over Lindsey Vander Weide and August Raskie.
The next four matches all wrapped up within about a minute of each other as the Huskies took care of business. Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye then closed out a win over Agost/Cole at No. 2, 21-15, 21-14. Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson won at No. 3 by a 21-13, 21-14 count over Willow Johnson and Lauren Page. At No. 4, Anna Crabtree and Kara Bajema knocked off Scott and Stone of Oregon, 21-16, 21-15. Samantha Drechsel and Natalie Robinson rounded things out with a 21-16, 21-13 win at No. 5.
The Huskies are now 5-1 all-time against the Ducks on the beach.
Vs. Stanford
The Huskies faced the 14th-ranked Cardinal looking to match USC with a 3-1 weekend record, but after the two hour break between matches and strong winds coming off the water, the Huskies had literally cooled off.
Stanford took four of the five first sets to put the Huskies in a hole. DeHoog and McPherson won their first set at No. 3 and backed it up with a win in the second to get one early point against Stanford's Formico/Raquel.
Needing to reverse a couple matches, the Huskies had a chance at No. 1, as Anderson and Gardiner had a set point opportunity in their second set against Hentz/Smith, but the Cardinal pair saved it and held on for the 21-14, 24-22 win.
Stanford clinched with second set wins at No. 2 and No. 4. At No. 2, Stanford's Villapando/Bowen completed a 4-0 weekend and gave Schwan and Julye their first loss, 21-13, 21-17. Crabtree and Bajema lost a close first set and couldn't bounce back, 21-18, 21-14, at No. 4 to Change/Keefe.
At the No. 5 spot, Samantha Drechsel and Natalie Robinson saved a match point to win their second set and force a third, and they then saved four match points in the third, but they lost a heartbreaker, 21-19, 21-23, 17-15, to Sharp/Richardson to complete the dual.
Next week the Huskies will conclude the regular season with a road trip to Boise, Idaho to take on Boise State for the third and fourth times this season.
