Huskies Open Season vs Maryland in Program's 1000th Match
August 22, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- The #24 Huskies open up the 2018 season with the 1,000th match in the storied program's history (more below). Washington welcomes another NCAA power to Montlake to kick off the season, hosting Maryland on Friday, August 24, at 8:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
Washington is coming off another successful season, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark. The Huskies posted a 12-7-1 overall record, their sixth 12+ win season in the last seven years.
Washington had three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team, tied for the most among conference schools. Seniors Quentin Pearson and Kyle Coffee along with 2017 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Blake Bodily earned the conference honors and look to lead the Huskies in 2018. Senior Scott Menzies, who finished second on the team in goals scored with seven, returns to pace the offense, while All-Pac-12 Second-Team pick Saif Kerawala returns to goal along with an impressive 1.15 goals against average last season.
Maryland Terrapins At A Glance
The Terrapins are three-time national champions and have reached the NCAA tournament in each of the last 17 seasons. By Maryland's standards, the 2017 season was a disappointing one, finishing with a 10-5-4 overall record and falling to Albany in a first-round shootout after playing to a 0-0 tie in regulation.
The Terrapins lost their top three scorers from last season, but announced a Top 15 recruiting class and return two players which combined for eight goals and six assists in Sebastian Elney and Amar Sejdic. In goal, junior Dayne St. Clair played every minute for Maryland last season, posting a 0.99 GAA while making 57 saves.
Maryland faces two other Pac-12 teams this season, following up its trip to Seattle by hosting Stanford Aug. 31. The Terrapins also take on UCLA on Sept. 7, battling the Bruins at home. Maryland also plays a non-conference home match against Denver–another common opponent with the Huskies.
Series History
This is just the second match between the two schools in program history. The only other contest came back in 2015 when Maryland recorded a 1-0 victory in College Park, MD. The Terrapins held a commanding 24-7 edge in shots but one bad bounce doomed the Huskies. In the 52nd minute, UMD sent in a dangerous cross which was inadvertently cleared into the UW goal by a Husky defender.
vs. The B1G Conference
Washington has played eight of the nine teams in the Big 10 Conference and has posted a 10-6-2 record overall against them. Four of those losses came against Indiana (0-4-0) while five wins have come against Wisconsin (5-0-0). Northwestern is the lone team the Huskies have yet to play from the Big 10.
For Openers...
Washington is riding a six-match winning streak in home openers, including an impressive 2-1 victory over New Mexico to kick off the 2017 season. The Huskies have historically had a measure of success in home openers, posting a 47-5-4 overall record in 56 such contests. In fact, Washington has lost just two home openers since 1988–both to Portland (2009 and 2011)–and has amassed a 25-2-2 in those last 29 home openers.
The Huskies are 38-13-5 all-time in season-opening matches, going 6-1-0 in seven seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark. The lone blemish on that record was a 2-1 defeat at Utah Valley to open the 2016 season. Washington defeated Gonzaga in five-straight season-openers from 2011-15, outscoring the Zags 11-1 in those matches.
