Dawgs Of Summer
August 28, 2018 | Baseball
After the Huskies' historic College World Series run in June, many of the players hit the road and traveled to locations throughout the country to play summer ball. There were many outstanding performances by the Dawgs during the summer and here are a few of the highlights.
Β
Braiden Ward, Sophomore, OF (Lacrosse Loggers, Northwoods League)
Ward, who as a freshman led the Pac-12 with 19 stolen bases, was voted to the All-Northwoods League Team. For the summer, Ward batted .310 for the Lacrosse Loggers with three home runs, 29 runs batted in, 50 runs scored and ranked second in the league with 35 stolen bases. At the season's end, Ward was voted the best hitter on his team and participated in the top-100 prospect workout.
Β
Chris Micheles, Junior, LHP (Bellingham Bells, West Coast League)
Coach Lindsay Meggs noted Micheles made "a significant jump" during the summer playing for the Bellingham Bells. The junior lefty from Puyallup, Wash., was consistently 90-92 mph with his fastball in 10 appearances for the Bells. He posted a 2.33 earned run average and struck out 25 hitters over 27 innings. In his final start of the regular season, Micheles threw five hitless innings and struck out eight to earn a win in an 11-1 victory over Cowlitz.
Β
Jack Enger, Sophomore, RHP (Humboldt Crabs, Independent)
Enger capped an excellent summer with the Humbloldt Crabs, the nation's oldest summer collegiate baseball team, by throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout against the Humboldt B52's. He struck out eight batters to power his team to a 5-0 win. For the summer, he struck out 29 batters while walking just three over 24 innings pitched. He "might be our surprise arm of the fall on the mound" Coach Meggs said following Enger's summer.
Β
Leo Nierenberg, Junior, RHP (Portland Pickles, West Coast League)
Nierenberg won three games and saved another in 10 games for the Portland Pickles of the West Coast League. He struck out 33 batters and allowed just 15 hits over 21 innings on the hill for the Pickles. He is poised to be the next in line as the Huskies' closer during the upcoming season after earning Honorable mention West Coast League honors.
Β
Christian Jones, Junior, OF (Duluth Huskies, Northwoods League)
Coach Meggs feels like Jones is one of the Huskies poised for a big year after a solid summer in the Northwoods League with Duluth. The lefty tapped into his raw power and smacked a team-high four home runs and added nine doubles in 133 at bats. He batted .286 overall and had 23 RBIs. Jones finished the summer especially strong, going 9 for 24 (.375) at the plate over the final six games. In his final game, an 11-7 win on Aug. 12 at Bismarck, Jones was 3 for 5 with a home run and three runs batted in.
