Huskies Get Up For Sweep Of Matadors
September 14, 2018 | Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho – It was an early morning for the Husky volleyball team, returning to the court for a 9:30 a.m. first serve against Cal State Northridge after last night's win over Boise State. The Dawgs showed they can be morning people, sweeping the Matadors at the Bronco Gym 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 in the first of two matches today.
Junior libero Shayne McPherson posted 19 digs in just three sets, handling a number of tips and offspeed shots from the Matadors and helping UW limit CSUN to just .040 on offense. Washington hit .277 today, with freshman setter Ella May Powell passing out 33 assists.
The Huskies also did a lot of damage from the service line, racking up eight aces, three from senior Destiny Julye who added seven kills, hitting .353, with four blocks and four digs.
Samantha Drechsel led all players with 11 kills, Kara Bajema hit .368 with 10 kills and eight digs, and Lauren Sanders had eight kills and five blocks while hitting .357.
"I'm really pleased with our net play and our serving starting to look more like the team we want to be in terms of how we're moving. It was one of our better side out matches on offense. I thought Ella May did a good job again, and Samantha managed the game well early, taking some tough swings, as did Lauren Sanders. Northridge did a nice job changing speeds and mixing it up and Shayne was able to put us in position to score out of those tough plays. We'll try and finish this thing up later today."
UP NEXT: The Huskies look to finish the Boise State Classic strong with a 4:00 pm Pacific/5:00 pm Mountain time match-up against Sacramento State.
SET 1: A pair of early kills for Bajema helped the Huskies out to a 4-2 lead in set one. The teams traded points for several rallies, with Sanders getting a couple early kills. Niece tooled the block on the slide and then a dig from Shayne McPherson led to a Bajema transition kill for 12-9. After a CSUN timeout at 14-10, the Matadors got a couple back, but Niece and Drechsel got a block on the left pin to spark a Husky run. Drechsel finished two in a row from the left and then McPherson bump set to Julye for a kill off the block on the right. Julye then hit one down hanging above the net to force the final CSUN timeout at 19-12 Dawgs. Out of the break, McPherson dropped a short serve straight down for an ace and on the next CSUN swing, Sanders and Julye stuffed it. The next point, Sanders and Julye put it straight down again for an eighth straight point. Drechsel killed an overpass the cap the 9-0 Husky run. Drechsel banged one off the block to put the set away at 25-17. Drechsel finished with six kills in the set while Bajema had five, hitting .500. The Huskies hit .351 overall and held CSUN to .108 as McPherson had seven digs.
SET 2: Set two opened with kills from Sanders and Bajema and a CSUN error for a quick 3-0 lead. Julye tipped over the block and down and then Sanders hammered a Powell quick set in transition for a 7-4 lead. Back-to-back aces from Julye pushed the lead to 10-5 and forced a CSUN timeout. The Dawgs kept rolling out of the timeout with a couple more McPherson digs and two straight kills from Sanders. Another ace from Julye made it 15-5 and prompted the last CSUN timeout. CSUN snapped the Husky run at 10 straight points with a block, and added a couple more before Sanders and Drechsel answered with a block for 18-8. Two more Husky blocks with Sanders in the middle got UW to 20-8. Bajema ripped the ball up the line and a Powell ace made it 23-13. On their first set point chance, a long rally was kept alive on a diving McPherson dig and Julye ended it with a kill on the right for 25-14. The Huskies hit .294 in the set with four kills apiece for Sanders, Drechsel, and Bajema and 14 assists for Powell plus eight more digs for McPherson.
SET 3: Marin Grote started the third in the middle for the Dawgs. Julye punched down a 50-50 ball on the first point and McPherson dropped in an ace for a 3-1 lead. Sanders put away a slide and Drechsel spiked down an overpass for an 8-3 Husky edge. Grote tapped down a hanger for her first point and Powell tallied another ace to make it 12-7 Dawgs. Shannon Crenshaw picked up her first kills on the left and Powell won a joust for 20-15. Another Crenshaw kill and a Julye spike of an overpass made it 22-15. A roll shot from Bajema got the Huskies to match point at 24-17. Sanders and Julye put up a roof on the next point to end things with a block, 25-17.
