Washington Rolls Through First Day of Husky Invite

SEATTLE --- The Washington women's tennis team won 12 of its 13 matches in the first day of action at the Husky Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Highlighting the action was freshman Ashley Chang, who earned her first collegiate singles victory and sophomore Delara Zamaniย who won her first match in nearly a year. Zamani, who suffered an injury early in 2018 which forced her to miss all of last season,ย recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Portland State's Nina Nikitovic. Meanwhile, freshman Ashley Chang picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colorado's Ellen Puzak to record her first collegiate win.ย
"Honestly, it was a big relief when match point was over," said Chang. "I've been waiting for this moment for a while to get my first win. It felt really good and I'm really happy with the way I played."
"It felt really good to get out there for the first time in a while," said Zamani. "I was just focusing on the business that needed to be taken care of out there. I wasn't really focused on winning, but doing the right things to prepare for the season."
On other courts, junior Vanessa Wong recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Colorado's Sophia Derivan, sophomore Sedona Gallagher beat Tullula Farrow of Colorado 6-1, 6-2, sophomore Zoey Weil picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Colorado's Ky Ecton.ย
Also in singles action, sophomore Nika Zupancic beat Portland State's Alli Valk, 6-0, 6-0, senior Katarina Kopcalic cruised past Lotti Meszaros of Portland State 6-1, 6-1, and senior Natsuho Arakawaย beat Antonia Balzert of Colorado 6-2, 6-4.ย
On the doubles side, the Huskies were a perfect 4-for-4. Wong and Arakawaย defeated Huchet/Spataro of Idaho 6-1, Gallagher and Zupancic beat Chen/Oleynick of Idaho 6-2, Weil and Chang beat Magalhaes/Todorovic of Idaho 6-2 while Zamani and Kopcalicย downed Nikitovic/Meszaros of Portland State, 6-0.
Washington returns to the courts on Saturday beginning play at 1:00 p.m. in day two of the Husky Invitational.
