February 19, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The 25th ranked Washington women's tennis team defeated Gonzaga 6-1 on Tuesday night at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Dawgs improved to 7-1 on the season with the victory. Playing in the top spot in the lineup, senior Stacey Fung defeated the #1 ranked player in the nation, Sophie Whittle, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (9).
"That was a great win tonight against a very tough Gonzaga team," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "I was very impressed with the way the girls handled the ups and downs of the matches. I thought we competed and executed our best when we needed to, which was great to see."
The Huskies got off to a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs by winning two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil took down Dominque Garley and Sara Komer 6-2 for the first Husky doubles win. Wong and Weil are now 3-0 in dual doubles matches on the year.
In the matchup on Court 1, Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic fell to Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas 2-6.
The doubles point would be decided in the second doubles matchup as freshman Sedona Gallagher and senior Kenadi Hance defeated Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta 6-3.
The Fung and Zupancic loss was the first doubles match loss so far as a team, through eight matches. The Huskies doubles record improved to 17-1 on the season.
In singles play, the Huskies quickly extend their lead to 2-0 as Gallagher defeated Vlada Medvedcova 6-0, 6-4. With the victory, Gallagher is now 5-0 in singles dual matches in her freshman year.
Next, the Dawgs made the match 3-0 as Wong beat Rosas in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Wong remains perfect in singles dual matches at 7-0 in the second spot in the lineup.
87th ranked junior Katarina Kopcalic clinched the fourth point and the victory for Washington as she too won her match in the third set 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
Zupancic won the fifth Husky point of the night as she beat Ketels in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The lone UW loss of the night came on Court 4, as Hance fell to Tsuruta 5-7, 3-6 to make it a 5-1 Washington lead.
In the final match of the night Fung matched up with the top ranked player in the country Sophie Whittle. Whittle took the first set 6-4, however Fung battled back to win the second in a tiebreaker 7-6 (6). Fung was able to come out on top, 11-9 in the third.
"It feels great to get the win today," commented Fung. "I played Whittle in the fall season and knew she is a tough competitor and was expecting another grind of a match. I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaches on the sidelines. They really helped me dig deep and stay calm tonight with their support. We've been pushing ourselves and working hard to get better, in all aspects every week, so it feels really nice to see our hard work pay off. I can't wait for the rest of the season!"
The Huskies will next head out on a two match road trip, facing UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. and San Jose State on Feb. 23 at 10 a.m.
"Our girls have been putting the extra work in and it is paying off and will continue to," continued Stephenson. "We have a quick turnaround for California, so we need to turn our attention to our next match and get ready to play outdoors on Friday."
