January 27, 2020 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Arizona – The No. 17 University of Washington men's golf team sits in third place at its spring season opening tournament held at Sewailo Golf Club hosted by the University of Arizona after posting a 3-over 571 (284-287). The Dawgs were led by senior Henry Lee who is tied for second overall after 36 holes on the par-71, 7,292 yard course.
"We really battled well in windy conditions today," said assistant coach Thomas Sutton. "We had some guys struggle early on and grind out a respectable score which was key as it kept us within striking distance of the lead heading into the final round."
Lee finished his two rounds at 5-under 137 (69-68) as the only Husky to post two rounds in the 60s on the day. The senior opened the morning with a 2-under 69, knocking in birdies on three holes to just one bogey while making par on the other 14 holes. After starting the second round, Lee continued his stellar play, getting to 2-under after 10 holes. He followed that with two more birdies to finish at 3-under 68, one stroke off of the individual lead.
"Henry played excellent golf today," added Sutton. "He stayed patience and let the birdies come to him. It was great to watch him plan his way around this course in tough conditions. A year ago, he shot an 8-under 63 in his final round here a year ago so he has good memories on this course and we're excited to watch him finish out tomorrow."
Junior Noah Woolsey also had a better second round like Lee as he finished tied for 14th (E-par 142) after climbing 16 spots over his second 18 holes with his 1-under 70 thanks to his four birdies in the afternoon. He opened the day at 1-over 72 but finished his round at 1-under over the final three holes before turning around and getting to 3-under over the next six holes which featured three-straight birdies. Despite two errors down the stretch, Woolsey closed his second round making par on nine of his 10 final holes and added one birdie.
Sophomore Paul Margolis enters Tuesday's final round tied for 28th after he carded a 3-over 145 (72-73). His two rounds featured 27 pars which tied for the lead in the field on the day after 36 holes and he added four birdies. Junior Jan Schneider was just behind him with a 5-over 147 which tied for 45th. Freshman Bo Peng had a tough go in the lineup on Monday, finishing tied for 76th at 13-over 155 (74-81).
Competing as individuals, sophomore Ranveer Grewal is tied for 50th at 6-over 148 (68-80), while freshman Nate Anderson is tied for 70th with a 12-over 151 (76-75) and senior Shamu Bodhidatta carded a 19-over 161 (75-86) and is in position No. 84.
The Huskies finish the final 18 holes on Tuesday starting at 7 a.m. PT and will be paired with New Mexico again.
