January 28, 2020 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Arizona – The No. 17 University of Washington men's golf team finished third overall on Tuesday at the Arizona Intercollegiate but did bring home some hardware as senior Henry Lee won the individual title with his 10-under 203 (69-68-66) following a playoff. Washington as a team carded an even-par 852 (284-287-281). Lee is the third Husky to win an individual title this season joining juniors Noah Woolsey and Jan Schneider.
"Our guys really fought hard today," said assistant coach Thomas Sutton. "We have some areas that we need to clean up but overall, it was a good first outing of the spring season."
Lee had another stellar round on Tuesday and did not score above 70 in each of the three rounds as he finished with a 10-under 203 (69-68-66). He saved his best round for last going 5-under. Lee opened the day going 1-over after his fifth hole but responded with an eagle on the next followed by two birdies.
Over the next 10 holes, Lee added three more birdies to one bogey forcing a playoff against Arizona's Trevor Werbylo, who is ranked No. 78 nationally.
On the first playoff hole, Lee was able to win the hole earning his first outright victory of the season. The senior previously shared the individual title this season with Noah Woolsey at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. Washington has had three different players win outright or win a share of a tournament title this season in Woolsey (3 wins, two shared), junior Jan Schneider (1 shared win) and Lee (2 wins, one shared).
"Henry really played excellent this week and was so steady," said Sutton. "The one tester was when he bogeyed the 17th but he responded with two birdies over the final three holes to get him in the playoff. He then made par on the first playoff hole to win outright for his second win of the season. Henry is such a hard worker, a great player and teammate and so it is great to see his work payoff with the win."
Joining him in the top 15 was junior Noah Woolsey who finished tied for 15th at 1-over 214 (72-70-72). Woolsey knocked in four birdies in his final 18 holes to record his fifth top 20 showing of the season. The junior, who was the September Pac-12 Golfer of the Month, has only finished below a tie for 18th once in six events this year.
"Noah is such a big player for us and he had a really solid week," added Sutton.
Sophomore Paul Margolis climbed two spots during Tuesday's round as he finished tied for 23rd at 3-over 216 (72-73-71). Margolis led the Huskies over the three rounds with 37 made pars on 54 holes including 10 in round 3. He also carded four birdies and four bogeys during his final 18 to finish the day at even par, his best round of the event.
"Paul keeps getting better and its fun to watch his game grow," said Sutton. "You could see how solid he played today and over the whole tournament and we're excited to see him keep getting better."
Junior Jan Schneider posted a 6-over 219 (71-76-72_ to tie for 41st while freshman Bo Peng rounded out the UW lineup, tying for 76th at 17-over 230 (74-81-75).
Competing as individuals, sophomore Ranveer Grewal tied for 52nd (+9, 222) while freshman Nate Anderson was 82nd (+23, 236) and senior Shamu Bodhidatta placed 83rd at 28-over 241.
Washington returns to the links next month at the Seminole Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-23 in Tallahassee. The Huskies have finished in the top 3 in five of its six events so far this year including three team tournament wins.
