Washington Downs Purdue 6-1 For Third-Straight Win
February 01, 2020 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Washington picked up its third-straight win with a solid showing on Saturday, beating Purdue 6-1 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies, who improve to 7-2 on the season and to 6-1 at home, jumped out to a quick lead in the match thanks to a pair of doubles wins. Nika Zupancic and Katarina Kopcalic picked up their second-straight win as a new tandem, cruising to a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Vanessa Wong and Natsuho Arakawa followed that with a win by the same score to clinch the point.
Purdue would get its lone point to open singles play, winning at No. 6. But the Huskies would answer right away with a win at No. 4 where Zupancic had little trouble winning 6-2, 6-1. Kopcalic would follow with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 to put Washington on the brink of the win.
Arakawa would clinch the match for the Huskies with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 with Vanessa Wong closing out a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 just moments later. Zoey Weil improved to 4-0 at No. 5 with a hard-fought 6-1, 7-5 victory.
Washington has a break before returning to action in the middle of the month, traveling to face Kansas State on Feb. 14 and Kansas on Feb. 16. The Huskies return home on Feb. 23 to face another Big Ten foe in Illinois.
