A Letter From Coach Meggs
March 23, 2020 | Baseball
When we talk as a team about our goals for Husky Baseball, we spend a lot of time talking about the following. Β We want to have the best TEAM ATTITUDE in the country. Regardless of the circumstances, we have to put the team first. Β Second, we refuse to be outworked. Β We are determined to be the most prepared team in America. Β Third, we are committed to playing the game one pitch at a time. Β In order to execute at the highest level we must be able to slow things down, trust the process and enjoy the moment. And last but not least, we need to be the toughest team in the country. Β In other words, we have to be able to do our jobs regardless of the circumstances.
Last week our season ended. Β Not because we gave up a ninth inning home run and not because we left the winning run on base. Our season ended due to circumstances beyond our control. Our season ended because of the Coronavirus. Β
And I can't begin to tell you how disappointed our players are. Β I really wouldn't know where to begin. Β But I can tell you this. Β They've handled it like the champions they are.
They understand that while their hearts are breaking, this is the best thing for everyone concerned. Β They can't and won't put themselves first. Β This is about all of us. They've shown a true TEAM ATTITUDE.
They are following directions to the letter. Working to prepare for every scenario. They are holding out hope that maybe some how, some way when this thing runs its course, that if we are the most prepared team in America at that moment, that maybe we can take the field together one more time, even if it's just to practice.
And while there are no 1-2 counts to finish, no hit and runs to execute and no game-winning moments to enjoy, I guarantee you our guys are still finding a way to enjoy the moment. Β They understand that even in these trying times, in order to be the best versions of themselves they still need to have an attitude of gratitude. Β Even under these circumstances they love being a Husky.
And finally they are displaying that toughness that we talk about every day. That despite these trying circumstances, they still have to do their jobs. Β And they know that at this point in time their job is to lead. Β And I guarantee you that as we speak I have 35 guys making everyone around them feel better about themselves, better about their lives, and better about tomorrow. Β Even if it is from six feet away.
Our season may be over. Β But once a Husky always a Husky. Β Go DaWgs!
