Huskies Riding High Into Tucson
February 13, 2021 | Women's Basketball
TUCSON - Washington (5-10, 2-10 Pac-12) returns to action on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT against No. 10 Arizona (13-2, 11-2), marking the second-consecutive year that they have faced the Wildcats on Valentine's Day.
The Huskies are riding high after they clamped down against Arizona State on Friday for a 50-35 win. The victory was the Huskies first of 2021 and snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Wildcats are winners in five-straight games, including a 60-51 win over Washington State on Friday, avenging their last loss on Jan. 10 in Pullman.
Sunday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Cindy Brunson and Joan Bonvicini on the call. Besides the Pac-12 Network, the action will be called locally on the UW/IMG College Network on KKNW 1150 AM, on the TuneIn App, or GoHuskies.com with Gary Hill behind the mic.
Leading the Break
• The 35 points allowed by the Huskies on Friday were the fewest by an opponent since a 65-34 win over Iona on Nov. 28, 2019 at the Puerto Rico Classic. The total marked the lowest by a current Conference opponent since 1978, when the Huskies held Oregon to 34 points in NWBL action.
• The Huskies held Arizona State to 1 for 17 shooting and 2 point during the first quarter.
• UW's 50 points on Friday were the fewest in a victory since a 49-44 win at Oregon State on Feb. 18, 2013.
• Darcy Rees moved into the Huskies' top-10 career list for blocked shots, surpassing Laura McLellan (69) for 10th all-time in UW history with 72. Up next, Regina Rogers (88).
• Either Quay Miller, Tameiya Sadler or Haley Van Dyke have led the team in rebounds in all 15 games this season and one of the trio has led the team in scoring in every game except when Darcy Rees led the team with 20 points against Oregon on Dec. 13.
• No player in the Conference has more offensive rebounds than Haley Van Dyke with 45. She also has the second most steals with 34, thanks in large part to 14 steals in her previous three games before getting shut out at Arizona State on Friday. In 12 Pac-12 games, Van Dyke leads the Conference averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds per game and ranks 3rd with 2.3 steals per contest.
Scouting the Wildcats
Arizona has been ranked for a school-record 28 consecutive weeks and was a program-best No. 6 for four weeks until a loss to No. 1 Stanford on Jan. 1. The Wildcats are led by Aari McDonald, who played her freshman season at Washington in 2016-17. She has scored in double figures in 81-straight games, the longest active streak in the nation and is third in the Pac-12 averaging 18.1 ppg. She is the active NCAA scoring leader and is fourth all-time in Arizona history. She is one of three 1,000 career points scorers on the roster. Cate Reese is second on the Wildcats in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game and has 1,050 in 83 career games. Sam Thomas has 1,045 career points in 149 games.
Arizona head coach Adia Barnes started her coaching career at Washington, spending five seasons as an assistant for the Huskies from 2012-16. Through her first four season, Barnes won 68 games, the most by any Arizona coach in program history.
All-Time Series vs Arizona
Washington leads the all-time series 42-25, but Arizona has won each of the last four matchups. UW is 25-7 all-time at home vs. Arizona and 17-16 in Tucson. Prior to the Wildcats four-game win streak, the Huskies won 10-straight from 2012-2017. Last season, the Huskies played at McKale Center on Valentine's Day and suffered a 64-53 loss to the No. 12 Wildcats. Arizona has won each of the last two meetings in Tucson. The Huskies last win at McKale was Jan. 13, 2017. That 90-73 win by UW was their fifth-straight in Tucson.
Last Game
The Washington women's basketball team led from start to finish and beat Arizona State, 50-35, Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. The win snapped the Huskies' (5-10, 2-10 Pac-12) eight-game losing streak and gave them their first win since Dec. 13 vs. Portland. The 35 points by the Sun Devils (9-7, 4-7) were the fewest by a Conference opponent since UW limited Oregon to 34 in 1978 when the teams were part of the Coast Division of the NWBL League. There were lots of individual heroes for the Huskies down in the desert, but it was the team's swarming defense that shined the most. ASU shot just 20.7% overall (12 of 58), including 12.5% from three-point range (3 of 24). They were 1 for 17 in the first quarter and scored just two points in the first 10 minutes. Quay Miller and Tameiya Sadler each scored 10 points to pace the Huskies. Miller and Haley Van Dyke pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Sadler dished out a career high five assists.
Up Next
The Huskies will host their final two games at home next week. They will face Utah on Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day on Feb. 21 against Colorado at 2:00 p.m.
