March 08, 2024 | Softball
SEATTLE – No. 5 Washington opened Pac-12 play with a 5-2 win over Arizona State on Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 17-2, 1-0 Pac-12 on the season and extend the winning streak to nine.
Ruby Meylan got the start, tossing her sixth complete game to improve her record to 7-1. Meylan struck out nine and allowed one walk on the evening.
Arizona State got on the board in the first on a solo home run by Kelsey Hall. The Sun Devils added to their lead in the second after Yannixa Acuna led off with a double and was brought around on a ground out by Sara Kinch for the 2-0 advantage.
Washington responded in the bottom half of the second when Kinsey Fiedler started the Huskies off with a single. Sydney Stewart followed with a single of her own. Olivia Johnson had a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Brooke Nelson brought across both runs with a single to center to tie the game at two.
A walk to Jillian Celis and single for Rylee Holtorf put runners at the corners to start the Husky half of the fifth. Holtorf went on to steal second, her fourth of the season. Fiedler knocked her second hit out to left center to give Washington a 4-2 lead.
In the sixth, Nelson hit her second double of the season to leadoff. A sacrifice bunt from Avery Hobson put pinch runner Jing Gardner at third. With one out, Celis sent a ball out to center that was caught but allowed Gardner to come in to score for the fifth run of the game.
The Sun Devils were able to get a runner on to start the seventh, but Meylan and the Husky defense were able to retire the final three batters to secure the 5-2 victory.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow afternoon in game two of the series against Arizona State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and airing on Washington Live Stream.
