UW Women To Race In Town Challenge Cup At Henley Royal Regatta
June 24, 2024 | Women's Rowing
The Washington women's rowing team will compete in the Town Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta next month in Henley-on-Thames, U.K.
The UW women will send a straight four to compete in the event, crewed by Abby Adebiyi, Elena Collier-Hezel, Nikki Martincic and Christiana Congdon, who were all seniors on the 2024 team.
In addition, Washington women's head coach Yasmin Farooq will coach a U.S. eight that will race in the Remenham Challenge Cup, the top race category for women's eights. That crew will include UW alumna Holly Drapp '21, and will row under the name "Princeton Training Center and Advanced Rowing Initiative of the Northeast, USA."
Both the UW four and the U.S. eight have been placed in the main draw, meaning neither will be required to row in a qualifying race.
Additional UW women will likely compete for their clubs in other events. Once the draw is held (June 29) and the schedule is announced, they'll be added to this page, along with a full schedule of races involving UW rowers.
The Washington women's most recent trip to Henley came in 2022, when the largest-ever contingent of Husky women traveled to the regatta. Washington competed in the Remenham Challenge Cup (8+), the Island Challenge (8+), the Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup (2-), and the Princess Royal Challenge Cup (1x).
The regatta hosts an excellent live video stream of all events on its YouTube channel. Use the link at the top-right of this page to watch all of the action.
Washington Rowing has a long history with Henley, which began to include women's races in 2000. While the regatta itself is much older – the event was first held in 1839 – the UW has made history on the Thames dating back more than six decades.
Sixty–four years ago, Washington's '58 men's crew, in the UW's first trip to Henley, lost in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup, but the Huskies gained their revenge over the Trud Leningrad Club (the Soviet national team) a few weeks later, in the historic rematch in Moscow, one of the marquee events in the history of UW athletics.
In 2018, the UW women sent crews to compete in the Remenham Challenge Cup, the Princess Grace Challenge (4x), and the Stonor Challenge Trophy (2x)
In 2000, Washington won the first open women's eight race (then called the Henley Prize), now called The Remenham Challenge Cup. The Washington women have never rowed in the Town Challenge Cup, which was first held in 2017.
