SEATTLE -- After spending four of the first five weeks of the season on the road, the Husky volleyball team is back home to start October. Six of the Huskies' nine October matches come at home inside Alaska Airlines Arena, giving the Dawgs a chance to string some wins together and start climbing up the conference standings. This week features back-to-back home nights, with Ohio State coming to town on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Iowa coming in on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Friday's match will be live streamed on Big Ten Plus, while Saturday will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network.
Washington lost its first two Big Ten matches last week on the road, and is looking to snap out of a string of close set losses. Despite losing nine consecutive sets, six of those coming against top-10 teams on the road, the largest margin of defeat in those nine sets has been only four points. Five of the sets have been decided by just two points, with three of them going to extra points.
The Huskies have been relying on their pins to push the attack, with Kierstyn Barton averaging a career-high 3.88 kills per set to rank eighth in the Big Ten, and Alexa Markley ranking 17th in the league with 3.40 kills per set. Markley is already just 12 kills away from her previous season-high, set back as a freshman at Penn State.
Ohio State is 3-7 on the season and 0-2 after week one of league play. OSU had a tough five set loss at home to UCLA last week, then fell in three sets to USC. The Buckeyes are hitting .208 and giving up a .239 mark to opponents. Hannah Jones is averaging 3.78 kills per set to rank ninth in the B1G. Olivia Hasbrook ranks second in the Big Ten with 3.75 digs per set. Setter Mia Tuman is averaging 8.30 assists per set.
The Hawkeyes are 10-4 and went 1-1 last week in conference, sweeping Maryland but getting swept by No. 7 Wisconsin. Iowa is hitting .256 and opponents are hitting .192 against them for the season. Setter Claire Ammeraal is averaging 9.21 assists per set and is also attacking frequently with 1.73 kills per set and a .406 attack percentage. Chard'e Vanzandt leads the team with 2.91 kills per set. Middle blocker Hannah Whittingstall is posting 1.31 blocks per set and 1.71 kills per set hitting .303. Milana Moisio anchors the back line with 3.67 digs per set.
