Purohit, Pearson Into Regional Semifinals

STOCKTON, Calif. – Topping the top seed in singles and cruising in doubles, Soham Purohit had himself a day at ITA Northwest Regionals. Purohit defeated 41st-ranked Alex Chang of Stanford, the tourney's No. 1 seed, after teaming with Brett Pearson for a morning doubles victory. Those wins put Purohit in singles, and Purohit and Pearson in doubles, into the semifinals on Monday.
Purohit is one win away from earning a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, as the two finalists from Regionals automatically advance. In doubles, only the champions qualify, so the Husky pair will need two more wins to reach NCAAs.
The doubles semifinal will go at 10 a.m. Monday at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center, and the singles semifinals are set for 1 p.m.
Purohit, a junior from Kirkland Wash., dropped the first set to Chang, 3-6, but then evened it up with a 6-4 second set win and got the late break of serve needed to take the 7-5 win in set three.
Pearson and Purohit, seeded fifth, beat the No. 4 seeds from Santa Clara, Kim/Bluett. The Huskies rolled, 8-2.
