Washington Ties Season-High Run Total, Takes Down Texas Tech In Las Vegas Finale
March 02, 2025 | Baseball
Washington improves to 4-8 while Texas Tech falls to 2-7.
Prior to the game, Washington and Texas Tech agreed to no additional inning after 6:30 p.m. due to a travel curfew. Ultimately, the game was completed in eight innings.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead when Colton Bower knocked his third home run of the season in the opening frame. The Red Raiders scored three in the top of the second, but Malakhi Knight added a solo home run in the second inning to trim Texas Tech's advantage to one.
Washington then scored nine runs over the next two innings to firmly move in front. The rally began with a two-RBI Trevor Kole triple in the third, bringing home Bower and Guerrero.
Kole's triple helped Washington hit for the cycle as a team for the second time this season and the second time in Vegas (Feb. 28 vs. Texas).
Sam DeCarlo hit the first of his two RBI singles in the third and then scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Braeden Terry. AJ Guerrero started the fourth with a two-run shot, his third straight game with a home run.
He now shares the team lead for home runs with Casen Taggart and Colton Bower.
Guerrero also pushes his hitting streak to eight games, having hit safely in each game he has been active this season. His home run total also increased to 36, moving him into a tie for fourth all time in the Washington record book.
In addition to a run scored on a passed ball in the fourth, Sam DeCarlo hit his second RBI single and was batted in by a Malakhi Knight double to conclude the scoring in the inning. Five Huskies tallied two-RBI games while four had multi-hit games, led by Sam DeCarlo and Malakhi Knight with three each.
Tommy Brandenburg, Sawyer Parkin, and Josh Emanuels shared the pitching duties against the Red Raiders, with Brandenburg going 3.2 innings with five runs and four strikeouts.
Parkin earned the victory, moving to 1-0 on the season after his 2.1 innings pitched along with two runs allowed and two strikeouts. Emanuels finished the game off, tossing the final two innings, fanning two and allowing one run.
AJ Guerrero (5-13, 1 2B, 3 HR, 8 R, 8 RBI, 3 BB), Colton Bower (6-11, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB), and Casen Taggart (5-11, 3 R, 3 RBI, 3 BB) were named to the All-Tournament Team, the second-most All-Tournament Team selections of the four squads in Las Vegas.
Washington had the best batting average of all teams at the tournament, as a team hitting .353 over the three games with a tourney-high 41 hits. The Huskies also tied Texas for the lead in home runs with six and shared the lead for least number of strikeouts with Illinois at 23.
Guerrero led all players with eight runs scored, eight RBIs, and three home runs. Sam DeCarlo had the second most hits in the tournament with seven, while Max Banks was second in the tourney in strikeouts with eight.
Washington returns to action for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon against Portland. First pitch is slated for 4:02 p.m., and fans can purchase tickets for just $2 as part of Washington's Two Dollar Tuesday promotion.
