SEATTLE – Wheels up for the Penn Relays. Washington sends a talented group back to one of the most storied meets in track and field this week to try and bring home the distinctive prize of a Penn Relay Wheel. Individual Huskies will be in action at Franklin Field starting this Thursday, Apr. 24, then UW is scheduled to compete in one relay on Friday, and four relays on Saturday.
Flotrack will stream the proceedings from Philadelphia.
Washington won its first ever Penn Relays Wheel last year when the Huskies captured the women's 4x800m Championship of America, doing so in Collegiate-Record fashion.
UW boasts one of the deepest mid-distance talent pools to draw from for these relays. The men had nine sub-four-minute milers in one meet during the indoor season, and the women currently have six women who have gone under 4:15 in the 1,500-meters this outdoor season; no other women's team has more than two.
First on Thursday, UW will have several individual competitors, starting with freshman Bodi Ligons in the 400-meter hurdles at 3:05 p.m. Pacific time. Then the trio of Mia Cochran, Maggie Liebich, and Claire Yerby will all race the 1,500-meters at 3:25 p.m. Amina Maatoug, Julia David-Smith, and Maeve Stiles are scheduled to race a 5k to wrap up day one at 5 p.m.
On Friday, at 11:15 a.m., the Husky men will race the DMR Championship of America, an event where they ran the World Record this indoor season.
Saturday starts at 9:40 a.m. with the women's 4x1500m Championship of America, followed shortly by the men's 4xMile Championship. The women will try to defend their 4x800m Championship of America title at 11:11 a.m., and the men's 4x800m will follow at 11:20.
Women available to race the relays include Cochran, Liebich, Yerby, Maatoug, David-Smith, Chloe Foerster, and Sophie O'Sullivan. The men will have Ligons for the 400m leg of the DMR, and the mid-distance group will feature Nathan Green, Ronan McMahon-Staggs, Rhys Hammond, Martin Barco, and Kyle Reinheimer.
