SEATTLE -- The Dawgs are back in their house this week, as Alaska Airlines Arena welcomes fans back inside for the first volleyball home matches of the 2025 season. This weekend is the only time to catch the Dawgs at home for the month of September, as they'll spend another two weeks on the road to close out the month. Washington (3-3) opens up the Husky Invitational this Friday night at 7 p.m. against Arizona, and then hosts San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. In-between the two UW matches, Arizona and San Diego face each other on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. All three matches will be streamed online, available with a Big Ten Plus subscription.
Washington is looking to build on a two-match win streak and get above the .500 mark for the first time this season, but it won't come easy as the Dawgs will have to snap former conference rival Arizona's 17-match winning streak dating back to last season. San Diego (3-3) also has some quality early season wins and close losses to top-25 opponents.
On Friday, Husky fans will get introduced to some new Dawgs making big impacts through the season's first six matches. Senior transfer Alexa Markley leads the team with 77 kills and is hitting .251. Redshirt freshman Addy Benefield has chipped in 28 kills so far and true freshman Simona Mateska ranks third with 1.85 kills per set and leads the team with 10 aces. Setter Taylor Simpson and DS Ava Jo Berry have also competed in 12 sets apiece thus far.
Arizona is 6-0 to start the year after winning its final 11 matches in 2024, winning the NIVC tournament to finish 24-9 on the year and 9-9 in the Big 12. Last week, Arizona won three matches in Boise, including a 3-2 win over the host Boise State Broncos, and a 3-1 win over Oregon State. OH Jordan Wilson was a preseason All-Big 12 pick, as she led Arizona last year with 3.81 kills per set. Arizona was voted seventh in the coaches poll. Through six matches the Wildcats are hitting .289 and holding teams to .166, and Arizona holds a 14.7 to 11.3 advantage in kills per set. Wilson continues to lead with 4.24 kills per set and Ana Heath is hitting .397 with 2.60 kills per set.
San Diego is 3-3 having gone 3-0 in week one in Hawaii, beating Utah State and Marquette in two five-setters, then sweeping Hawaii. But USD was 0-3 in week two at USC, falling in four sets to No. 13 Creighton, in five sets to No. 22 USC, and in four sets to UC Santa Barbara. The Toreros were the WCC preseason favorites. Nemo Beach is currently averaging 3.58 kills per set and Isabel Clark is posting 3.27 per set. Kali Engeman is hitting .400 with 1.77 kills/set and BayLea Sparks is leading the block with 1.20 per set. Libero Olivia Bennett has 3.62 digs per set and setter Kylie Munday is posting 8.85 assists per set. This is San Diego's first visit to Montlake since 2018.
