SEATTLE --Â It's one battle after another in Big Ten play for the newly ranked Husky volleyball team, which is back home for the first time in three weeks. Washington looks to start October the same way it ended September, improving its own level and stepping up to each new challenge. This week, the 22nd-ranked Huskies will host an Illinois squad coming off consecutive top-25 upset wins, then 10th-ranked Purdue gives UW its first official ranked opponent of the season.
Washington (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and the Fighting Illini go this Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in Alaska Airlines Arena, and then the Dawgs and Boilermakers face off on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. Both matches will be live streamed via Big Ten Plus.
The Huskies are coming off their first 2-0 Big Ten road trip since joining the conference in 2024, getting a win over previously unbeaten Michigan State and following that with their first ever win in Ann Arbor over Michigan. That jumped the Huskies from outside the rankings up to No. 22 in the newest AVCA coaches poll, which is UW's first time ranked since midway through the 2024 season.
Illinois had a case to be ranked this week as well but ended up just outside in the "receiving votes" category at 27th. The Fighting Illini are 10-3 and have won six in a row, including upsets last week of then-No. 15 Minnesota and then-No. 23 USC. Losses in non-conference came to a ranked Tennessee team, Marquette and Cincinnati in the opener. Illinois is fourth among Big Ten teams with a .296 attack percentage and it has held opponents to a .192 mark. The service line might carry extra importance as both UW and Illinois are surrendering few aces to their opponents. UW ranks second in the Big Ten, allowing only 0.90 aces per set, and Illinois is third at 0.96. Paityn Chapman is seventh in the Big Ten with 3.62 kills per set. Kristina Starostenko is fourth with a .447 attack percentage. Kenna Phelan sets the team with 10.29 assists per set to rank eighth. And libero Talita Goncalves is second in the league with 4.16 digs per set.
The Boilermakers are ranked 10th in the country with a 8-3 record and they opened conference play with a sweep of Maryland and a straight set loss to No. 6 Wisconsin. Purdue had big non-conference wins over No. 8 SMU and defending NCAA Champion Texas A&M. They are hitting .268 as a team and holding opponents to a .168 mark, and they rank fourth in the B1G in kills per set with 14.08, fifth in blocks at 2.64, and second in digs at 15.27. Addy Tindall is third in the league with 4.16 kills per set, Taylor Anderson is seventh in assists at 10.38, and Ryan McAleer is seventh in digs with 3.78.Â
