Huskies Split Matches in Day Two of Diablo Invitational
February 28, 2026 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE,Ariz. - The University of Washington Men's Tennis Team split a pair of matches this afternoon against Tulane University and Michigan State University by a scoreline of 4-3 and 0-4, respectively. This brings the Huskies' weekend match results to 1-2, with the lone win being the aforementioned contest versus Tulane. Washington is now (6-6) on the season with Big Ten play on the horizon, as the Dawgs will travel next week to play both Northwestern and Illinois.
In the conclusion of last night's doubles match against Tulane's Green Wave, the Dawgs responded to the early deficit caused by dropping the doubles point. Four of the six singles matches opened by winning their first sets. Leading the charge, Brett Pearson opened the set with a fast 6-1 set one win, followed by an inspired performance that saw the senior emerge the match with a 6-2 second set and first Husky point of the day, equalizing the match 1-1. Not to be outdone, each of the final winning points all came down to a third and final set, with Stephane Kamendje defeating his opponent to give the Huskies a 2-1 match lead. Rohan Belday would be the next Dawg to put his mark on the match, as after Daniel Bien dropped his own third set match to force a 2-2 tie, Belday would win 7-5 from a third set of his own, forcing a 3-2 Husky lead. Tulane would equalize yet again, as Soham Purohit would uncharacteristically drop his singles match, snapping a six-match unbeaten run, after a second set tiebreak 7-6(3) victory, forcing the deciding third set, where he would go on to drop the set 2-6.
Enter Hyeonseok Seo, the freshman who started the season and his collegiate career on a three-match winning streak, and has been holding down the Washington No. 6 position for the majority of the season. Hyeonseok would open the day with a 7-6(5), first set tiebreak win, followed by a 4-6 back-and-forth loss in the second set. This early delay in match speed led Hyeon to become the final match of the day, where in his third set, he stumbled early, going down 1-2. After this early deficit, Hyeon would respond valiantly, going up 5-3, dropping one last game to go 5-4, before ending the match on an opponent's error in a rally that sent the ball into the net, giving Hyeonseok and the Huskies the 4-3 victory.
In the second match of the day, Michigan State won 4-0 in straight sets.
