SEATTLE – Washington athletes posted six new marks in the top-10 lists during a long day of competition at both the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Southern California. The jumps squad accounted for half of those with personal bests in the high jump from Leland Lieberg, and the triple jump from Trevontay Smith and Roman Hutchinson.
Mt. SAC Relays Recap
The Husky sprinters, jumpers, and throwers did their work at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California today, on the third day of the Mt. SAC Relays.
One of the day's big moments was senior Leland Lieberg joining the seven-foot club, a huge mark for any high jumper. He got over 7-0 1/4 on a third attempt to finally join that rarefied air. That mark ties Lieberg for 10th in school history.
Smith and Hutchinson each came up with career-bests in the latter rounds of the triple jump today. Smith went to 10th in the West Region and improved his No. 3 mark in school history with a leap of 51-7 1/4 in the fifth round. He also had a 51-0 3/4 mark on his final attempt.
Hutchinson put one together for a mark of 50-10 3/4 in the fifth round, which moves him into the top-10 list at No. 7 overall.
In the sprints at Mt. SAC, Jonathan Frazier won the collegiate section of the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 51.39. Mikayla Gardley ran her first 400m hurdles of the year and had a PR of 1:00.64.
Also in action today was Ava Washburn in the long and triple jumps. She went 18-10 1/2 in the long and 39-3 in the triple. Addy Kelly had a triple jump of 37-8 1/2.
Avril Wilson cleared 12-9 1/2 in the pole vault today.
In the discus, Yvonne Colson set a new PR with a throw of 151-7.
Bryan Clay Invitational Recap
In her first race since breaking the School Record in the 10,000-meters, Chloe Thomas went just half as long tonight and posted a 5,000-meters time of 15:32.36 in the invite section. That moves her to No. 5 on the Husky outdoor top-10.
For the second time in two weeks, Julia David-Smith turned in a 15:38 5k. She was 15:38.76 at Stanford and 15:38.80 tonight at Bryan Clay.
Evan Jenkins ran his first 5k since the NCAA Indoor Championships, and he improved his outdoor best to a time of 13:32.34, which moved him up one spot on the Husky top-10 to No. 5 overall.
Earlier in the day, Jenica Swartz and Chloe Symon each ran the 800-meters in the 2:03 range. Swartz clocked a 2:03.45, and Symon went 2:03.84, which put her at No. 9 in school history outdoors.
In late night 5k heats, ending after 11 p.m., Abby DeVeau broke the 16-minute mark for the first time in her career, just going under in 15:59.73. At the stroke of midnight, the final men's race finished, with Nathan Neil running a season's-best 13:56.23, and Parker Mong finishing in 14:05.95.
