FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Already the school record-holder in the 10,000-meters, and a Big Ten Champion in the event, Evan Jenkins checked off one more big career first tonight in the 25-lapper. At John McDonnell Field on the first day of NCAA West Prelims, Jenkins punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a fantastic fifth-place finish in the 10k.
Jenkins is the first Husky qualifier from Prelims on to the NCAA final site in Eugene from June 10-13. Athletes at Prelims are all aiming for top-12 finishes to keep their championship aspirations going.
The native of Camas, Wash. turned in one of the best runs of his already stellar Husky career, running near the front of the 48-man field and responding to every increase in pace, never looking phased in the Arkansas humidity. Jenkins easily earned the top-12 finish and his first career trip to NCAA Outdoors, taking fifth in 28:51.40.
Jenkins will be the first Husky in the men's 10k final since Kieran Lumb in 2022. It was an especially impressive breakthrough at Prelims for Jenkins, whose previous best at the meet was 36th last season.
Most of the track action was moved up much earlier in the day due to incoming weather. First up were four Dawgs in the 1,500-meters. Tyler Bilyard ran in the first of four heats, then three Dawgs—Reuben Reina, Martin Barco, and Josiah Tostenson—were grouped together in heat three.
Aiming for top-five finishes in the heats, Bilyard earned his qualifier in heat one as he took fifth in a fast time of 3:40.06. In the third heat, Barco and Reina each locked up top-five finishes to advance. Barco was second in the heat in 3:41.82, and Reina was fifth in 3:42.94. Tostenson capped his freshman season in 12th in the heat in 3:48.89. Bilyard, Barco and Reina will all race on Friday for spots in Eugene.
In the first round of the 400-meters, junior Alex Rhodes had an impressive return just two weeks after he was forced to pull up in the finals of the Big Ten Championships. Rhodes ran a conservative first 200-meters before ramping things up and securing a quarterfinal spot in third, with a time of 45.69.
Junior Jonathan Frazier also made his way into Friday's quarterfinal rounds in the 400-meter hurdles. Frazier ran a time of 50.93 to advance out of heat six.
The drama of the long day one went down to nearly the last of nearly 150 throws in the javelin, close to midnight in Arkansas. Carson Olmstead had the second-farthest throw of his career on his final attempt, going 224-6. That had him in third-place after three of the four flights. Olmstead was hanging on to 12th-place overall in the final round of throws in flight for, but one of the final throwers of the meet jumped over Olmstead and he finished in the unlucky 13-spot.
Thursday things switch over to the women's competition, except for the men's pole vault which was postponed due to the storms today. Women's javelin will be the first Husky event, at 12 noon Pacific, then the men's vault starts at 12:40 p.m., and the women's 1,500-meter first rounds get things underway for UW on the track at 4:30 p.m.
