EUGENE, Ore. – Sofia Cosculluela sits in fifth-place after day one of the women's heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and Reuben Reina took his shot in the men's 1,500-meter final, as the two All-Americans repped Washington on the third day of the meet at Hayward Field.
Reina put himself in the mix from the gun and fought off some challenges to hold the lead going into the final lap. He was still in second with less than 200 meters to go, but ran out of steam on the homestretch and fell back to 11th at the finish line in 3:39.15. Reina earns Second Team All-America honors for that finish. He was the final competitor for the UW men's team at this year's championships.
Cosculluela is looking to better her sixth-place NCAA heptathlon finish from a year ago. She entered with the best mark in the NCAA this season, with 6,093 points.
The native of Madrid, Spain, opened up with a strong 100m hurdles time of 13.46 seconds, ranking third among the 24 competitors, despite her heat going into the stiffest headwind. Cosculluela earned a new lifetime-best in the high jump, the day's second event, as she cleared 5-6 1/2. Her shot put was a few feet short of her season-best, but still sixth overall at 41-5 3/4. She was then sixth again in the 200-meters to close out day one, in a time of 24.09 seconds.
Heading into the final three events on Saturday, Cosculluela sits in fifth-place with 3,574 points. The long jump starts day two at 2:30 p.m.
Along with Cosculluela, the final day will see the women try to add to their 18 teams points, with Julia David-Smith and Chloe Thomas in the 5,000-meters final at 6:55 p.m.
