SEATTLE – A mix of new and old will lead the Husky cross country teams into their season opener early Saturday morning. Washington begins its 2026 season in Terre Haute, Ind. at the John McNichols Invitational, running on the same course where it hopes to finish the season in mid-November.

With the McNichols Invite, UW will get to preview the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, which will host the NCAA Championships to end the year. Many other teams are thinking along the same lines, as the fields are large and very talented.

The Husky women begin the year ranked No. 22 nationally while the men are unranked but returning a lot of firepower.

The women's 6,000-meter championship race will be run bright and early at 5:30 a.m. Pacific time, 8:30 a.m. in Terre Haute. The men's championship 8k will follow quickly at 6:05 a.m. Pacific. Open races will go at 6:40 a.m. for the women and 7:15 a.m. for the men.

Expected to make the trip for the women are Elena Aldrink, Nicole Bissell, Rory Clare, Eva Cragnolino, Sherry Drury, Abigail Hennessy, Charlotte Hopkins, Gioana Lopizzo, Lauren McCalla, Elissa Schaeffer, Sophie Schoolmeester, and Josephine Welin. Only Welin has run cross for the Dawgs before and Lopizzo is the only other returner on the trip. Eight of those women (Aldrink, Cragnolino, Drury, Hennessy, Hopkins, McCalla, Schaeffer, Schoolmeester) will be making their collegiate debuts.

The men on the other hand have just one newcomer and six returners set to run. They will take Isaac Briggs, Jamar Distel, Tyrone Gorze, Parker Mong, Nathan Neil, Josiah Tostenson, and the one newcomer, Theo Schucht, the Boston College transfer.
