THIS WEEK: The Washington mens and womens varsity, junior varsity and frosh/novice crews travel to Northern California for the annual dual regatta with California, Sat., April 25 at Redwood Shores in Belmont, Calif. Racing begins at 10 a.m.
The mens varsity competition dates back to 1903, with 87 meetings between the Bears and the Huskies. At stake is the Schoch Cup, named after Delos Schoch of UWs class of 1936. The current Huskies have a five year win streak in the varsity series. On the womens side, the rivalry dates back to 1977 and the UW varsity has a seven year win streak.
Washington and California have already raced against each other this season, at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 4-5. The varsity men won the grand final of the Copley Cup, in a time of 5:38.66 over the second place Bears at 5:42.15. Cal won the junior varsity and frosh races, where the Huskies finished fourth and second, respectively. The Washington womens junior varsity and novice crews won both its races, where the Cal jayvee were fifth and the novice second. The womens varsity has not yet faced California.
In the first-ever US Rowing preseason coaches poll, the Washington and California varsity boats were picked to finish first and second, respectively, at the season-ending IRA Championships. The UW womens varsity was also picked to defend its NCAA title, while California was in the received votes category of the preseason poll.

THIS SEASON: Washington opened the 1998 season in impressive fashion, winning four of six races at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 4-5. The varsity men won a fourth straight Copley Cup and the women won a seventh straight Whittier Cup. The womens junior varsity and novice crews also posted victories, with the jayvee winning a sixth straight race and the novice posting its third win in the last four years. The mens JV finished fourth in its grand final and the frosh boat placed second.
The Huskies are undefeated in dual meet competition as well, with victories over Washington State and Wisconsin. Washington used a different lineup in the mens varsity race versus club-level Cougar mens program.
LOOKING AHEAD: Washington hosts the 12th annual Windermere Cup races on Opening Day, May 2. The varsity men will aim for an eighth straight Windermere Cup title as they host the Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association, the crew that handed the Huskies their only loss of the 1997 season, at the Royal Henley Regatta. The womens Windermere Cup features the British National Team and the University of Virginia, as the Huskies aim for a seventh straight victory. In junior varsity competition, the Husky women aim for an eighth straight and the men aim for a seventh straight Cascade Cup. The Cascade Cup features teams from Northwest universities and colleges, as well as an additional entry by a second boat from Nottinghamshire.
This year also features the first-ever Windermere Challenge Cup, with the U.S. mens and womens National Teams competing against the Canadian National Teams.
LEADING the TEAM: Captains for the 1998 crew season are seniors Brett Reisinger (Kent, Wash.) and Denni Nessler (Pleasantville, NJ).
MENS VARSITY EIGHT:
The Washington-California mens varsity eight dual series dates back to 1903, with 87 meetings between the two schools. At stake is the Schoch Cup, named after Delos Schoch of Washingtons class of 1936. Schoch lettered three years (1934-36) as a Husky oarsman. Washington currently leads the varsity series 63-22-1.

Washington and California have a womens varsity eight rivalry that dates back to 1977. The Huskies lead the series 16-5. The Huskies have won 15 of the past 17 races including first-place finishes in the last seven years.

Mens Junior Varsity Eight
Washingtons junior varsity eight series with California dates back to 1939, with Washington winning 36 of 55 races since that time. There were no races between 1943 and 1946. The Huskies longest win streak is five wins from 1971 through 1975 and again from 1940 through 1948. Californias longest win streak is three wins from 1979 through 1981. The UW has won 10 of the past 15 races, winning back-to-back races in 1993 and 1994 to end a three-year win streak begun by the Bears in 1989.
Mens Freshman Eight
Washingtons freshman eight series with California dates back to 1939, with Washington winning 47 of 55 races since that time. There were no races from 1944 through 1946. The Huskies longest win streak is 15 consecutive from 1966 through 1980. Californias only back-to-back titles were won in 1981 and 1982, and in 1940 and 1941. The UW has won 11 of the past 15 races, including the last four consecutively.
Womens Junior Varsity Eight
Washingtons junior varsity eight series with California dates back to 1975, with Washington winning 18 of 22 races since that time. There was no JV eight race in 1983 or 1995. The Huskies longest win streak is 10 wins from 1979 through 1989. California has never won back-to-back races. The UW has won 13 of the past 15 races, including the past six consecutively. Cals last win was in 1990.
Womens Novice Eight
Washingtons novice eight series with California dates back to 1977, with Washington winning 16 of 21 races since that time. The Huskies longest win streak is six consecutive from 1978 through 1983. California has never won back-to-back titles. The UW has won 13 of the past 16 races, including the last seven consecutively. Cals last win was in 1989.
