Seattle - The Washington men's soccer team recorded its third shutout of the season and posted the first-ever victory in Pacific-10 Conference action as it blanked Oregon State, 1-0, in the league opener in front of 551 fans at Husky Soccer Field. This year marks the beginning of league play for men's soccer within the Pac-10 and the UW-OSU game was first on the schedule.
The Huskies, who have won six of their last seven games, improve to 6-3-0 overall while Oregon State drops to 5-4-0.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore reserve Dayo Oyetuga (Everett, Wash.) connected on a header from the left post that bounced in the goal at 59:48. Junior Zach Kingsley (Spokane, Wash.) continued his hot streak, earning the assist on Oyetuga's goal after he sent a cross from the right side to set up the score. Kingsley, from Shadle Park High, scored a pair of goals in two games last weekend. For Oyetuga, it was his third career goal and first this season.
The Huskies took took 17 shots in the game and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks while the Beavers recorded nine shots. OSU was whistled for 21 fouls, including three yellow cards, while the Huskies had 13 fouls in the game.
Sophomore Chad Olsen (Issaquah, Wash.) went the distance again in goal for the Huskies, recording his third shutout of the year. He had five saves in the game while OSU's Peter Billmeyer had eight to his credit.
"Dayo (Oyetuga) answered some questions for us today," said Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger. "He's an athletic player and a threat at the back post. It was nice to see him get a goal. Zach Kingsley continues to be a difference maker for us. We're pleased with the result today. It was the first-ever Pac-10 game and one of our goals was to come out on top for this one. Oregon State is a northwest rival so they brought everything they had today. They were hustling. They stopped us in our areas of strength, closed off our forwards. Our midfield was a bit lethargic early. You have to give Oregon State credit. They battled. "Now we have to get ready for an undefeated Stanford team. They look awesome statistically. It will be tough for us, but I think we've got the team to do it."
After five straight home games, Washington hits the road for a Pac-10 match against undefeated Stanford, Oct. 6. The Huskies return home to host California at 2:15 p.m., Oct. 8. The game is a double-header, following the Washington-California women's game at noon.
